Transportation

Investing in transportation creates jobs and keeps our economy moving. Every $1 billion we spend on highways and road projects creates 47,000 jobs in our community. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I strongly support investing in transportation to relieve congestion, improve safety and spur economic growth in our communities.

In 2009, I supported legislation to stem the tide of job loss and help rebuild our economy.  This legislation included funding for transportation projects in our community, including installing sidewalks to schools in Arlington, constructing a new access road in Ferndale, and creating a park and ride lot in south Mount Vernon.

I support further investments in our nation’s transportation infrastructure to create jobs and build a foundation for future economic growth.  As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I am working to help pass a new surface transportation authorization bill that will invest in our roads, bridges, transit, and freight infrastructure.

Ferries

In Washington state and many other parts of the country, ferries connect communities to keep our economy moving.  Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the country and carries over 25 million riders annually.  For thousands of my constituents, ferries offer the only practical way to get to work and return home.

I introduced a bill, the United States Ferry Systems Investment Act, which would improve and expand federal investment in ferry transportation.  My legislation would strengthen our federal commitment to ferries to create jobs, invest in public safety and help build a foundation for long-term economic growth.

Pipeline Safety

After a deadly pipeline explosion occurred in Bellingham, I fought hard for a bill to strengthen our pipeline safety regulations.  This bill was eventually signed into law in 2002.  In 2006 I worked to pass legislation to update and strengthen the 2002 law.  Working together with families, advocates in the community, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I will continue to work on improving pipeline safety in our country.
