Rep. Maloney hails election of India to U.N. Security Council |
WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), whose congressional district includes the U.N. headquarters, issued the following statement after the election of Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa to non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council for 2011 and 2012:
"The Security Council is the U.N.'s most prestigious and powerful entity, and the election of these nations is a testament to their democracies and their commitment to the principles of the U.N. Charter," Rep. Maloney said. "The election of India, in particular, is recognition of that country's significant role in addressing the conflicts in their region and the support they have within the community of nations. India re-enters the Security Council for the first time in almost two decades, and has seen great economic and social progress in that period.
"If the new countries elected today follow through on their pledges of increased transparency in the Security Council's deliberations and positions, it can only benefit the causes of human rights, nuclear non-proliferation, and promotion of democracy and prevention of terrorism around the world."
