Chandler and McConnell Announce $217,550 in Lawrenceburg

Federal funding will help purchase a fire truck for the Lawrenceburg Fire Department

WASHINGTON (May 10, 2010)—Today on Court Street in Lawrenceburg, Congressman Ben Chandler joined city and fire officials to announce the allocation of $217,550 in federal funding to the Lawrenceburg Fire Department. This money, secured in conjunction with Senator Mitch McConnell, will be used to purchase a new fire truck for the department.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Chandler, alongside Senator McConnell’s Field Representative Kevin Atkins, presented Mayor Edwinna Baker with a check for the funds.

“Senator McConnell and I have been working on this fire truck for a while now, and I am so happy we are bringing good news today.” Chandler said. “After this announcement, I am going to go with some officials to take a look at the flood damage in Anderson County. A disaster like this really reminds us how necessary and how brave our emergency personnel truly are.”

“This grant will support the efforts of the Lawrenceburg firefighters who risk their lives in service to others,” Senator McConnell said.  “I am proud to have played a part in securing funds for this vehicle to help ensure that the firefighters are adequately prepared to respond to emergencies.”

This federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is a grant awarded to local fire departments and departments of emergency medical services to pay for training and equipment.
