Committee Passes Chandler's Landmark Bill to Repair Public Schools

WASHINGTON, (April 30, 2008) – The 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act (H.R. 3021) was approved today by the United States House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor. This bill, sponsored by Congressman Ben Chandler, would provide much-needed funding to public schools for modernization, repair and renovation, including technological improvements in the classroom.

“Where students learn can have a huge impact on what they learn,” said Chandler.  “I am excited about what this money can do for Kentucky schools and schools around the nation. As countries around the world, including India and China, make progress in educating their students, it is important that we do what is necessary to compete in this global economy. I am eager to see this legislation pass so we can give our kids the educational environment they need to succeed.”

This legislation authorizes almost $7 billion in federal grant money for school districts to repair, modernize and renovate facilities. These modernizations and repairs can range from upgrading or installing educational technology to undertaking asbestos and lead abatement projects.  This legislation will also create new construction jobs and increase energy efficiency throughout our public schools.

With today’s passage by the Committee, the bill is now eligible to be considered on the floor by the full House.

“Education is an investment in the future of America,” Chandler added. “By moving this bill forward we are sending a clear signal that education is a central, critical focus of our country.  The future of America’s young people rests in our hands.”
