Chandler to Announce Winners of Art Competition

WASHINGTON (April 25, 2007) Congressman Ben Chandler will be announcing the winners of the 2007 Congressional Art Competition at a reception on Friday, April 27 at 7:00 PM.  The reception will be held on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in the atrium of the Business and Technology Center.

Created in 1982, the annual Congressional Art Competition provides a unique opportunity for high school students across the United States to demonstrate their creative talents and compete for a chance to showcase their artwork in the nation’s capital.

“I believe the arts and humanities are a vital part of education and culture in the Commonwealth, so I am thrilled about the opportunity to meet with so many talented young artists from high schools around the Sixth District,” said Congressman Ben Chandler.

Congressman Chandler will be presenting awards to winners from each participating county and each art category, which include: paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography.  Counties participating in the art competition include: Anderson, Boyle, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Powell, and Woodford Counties.

In addition, one overall winner will be chosen to display his or her art piece in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year.  Last year’s overall winner was Marie Ito of Henry Clay High School in Lexington.

Individual press releases on the winners from each county, including pictures of Congressman Chandler with the winners, will be released following the reception.
