Chandler Announces Winner of Congressional Art Competition

WASHINGTON (July 6, 2006) Today, Congressman Ben Chandler announced Marie Ito as the winner of the 2006 Congressional Art Competition for the 6th Congressional District.  Ito is a Senior at Henry Clay High School and is the daughter of Hideo and Taeko Ito of Lexington.

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual, national competition of high school students who submit art to their respected representative to be judged. Each member chooses one winner whose art will be displayed in the United States Capitol. 

“The significance of the arts was impressed upon me at a young age.  My mother is an artist, and she taught me the importance of creativity, art appreciation and art history,” said Congressman Ben Chandler.  “The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity for high school students to have a meaningful experience with art.” 

Ito’s artwork was entitled, “Train Across Connecting Water”, medium is Acrylic“We were all very impressed with Ito’s art work.  She is a very talented young lady,” said Chandler.

Ito traveled to Washington with her Mother to meet with Congressman Ben Chandler and attended a ribbon cutting ceremony which officially opened the display of artwork for winners of the art competition.

Ito was the overall winner of the competition, but there were also categorical winners who received recognition from Chandler’s office.
