WASHINGTON (March 6, 2003) Congressman Ben Chandler is working to gather support from his
congressional colleagues to reject the President’s proposal to slash the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program by $47 million, which is a nearly 50% cut to the
program.
As a first step, Congressman Chandler is
circulating a letter among his colleagues this week asking for their support in challenging the Appropriations Committee to reject the President’s cuts in his FY07
budget. The letter calls for $97 million in funding for the FRPP, as mandated by the 2002 Farm Bill.
The Farm and Ranch Lands Protection
Program (FRPP) is a federal program that provides incentives to landowners to keep productive farm and ranchland in agricultural use. The FRPP is a vital tool for preserving our land and the character of rural communities.
“By ensuring that land cannot be developed, the FRPP is an important tool for maintaining the integrity of our bluegrass,” said Congressman Chandler. “As seen with the enormous sprawl of Lexington, we have to do all we can protect our land.”
