Chandler Challenges Governor to Keep Newtown Pike Promise

“Last year I was pleased to secure $18 million in federal funds for Lexington’s Newtown Pike Extension Project.  Now that the federal funds are in place, it’s time for the Governor to do his part and make certain that the previously committed state funds are there to keep this project on track.”

“It is absolutely critical that the Administration and state legislature maintain promised levels of funding and not transfer money to other transportation projects.  We cannot afford for the Newtown Pike Extension project to be delayed or under funded with the 2010 Equestrian Games coming to Lexington.”

“This is the top priority of Lexington, the second largest city in the state.  At a time when the state is funding a new arena and two hugely expensive bridges in Louisville, the least the Governor and the legislature could do is fund this modest request.”

“On February 27, 2006 I sent a letter to Secretary Nighbert asking for an update from the Transportation Cabinet on how it plans to implement this project and other High Priority Projects throughout the 6th district.  In the letter I called on the Transportation Cabinet to allocate the resources needed to expeditiously complete these projects.  It is critical that the citizens in the 6th district know of the Transportation Cabinet’s plans and timetables for completion of these projects.”
