Uni lost; that's all there is to report - OC Register
Two thousand people showed up for the University High (Uni) v. Beckman High football game last weekend. I am an alum of Uni (Class of '92), so I decided to walk there from my house to see the game and the mayhem surrounding traffic and parking that some who oppose a new football stadium suggested would ensue.
Uni lost the game and there was nothing else to report. There was plenty of extra parking at the school and no rioting, no hit-and-runs, no car-jackings or increased incidents of prostitution or whatever else detractors claim would happen if high school football fans were thrust upon nearby Turtle Rock and University Town Center neighbors.
At the game I ran into a friend of mine, Barry Zanck, a mortgage broker who lives is Turtle Ridge, and Irvine Unified School District Trustee Michael Parham, both of whom decided to park at Mariners Church and ride the free shuttle bus to Uni to avoid the traffic and what they thought would be a tight parking situation. According to Zanck's conversation with the shuttle driver, only about a dozen people rode the shuttle all day.
Balance With Beth
Chances are that you missed last weekend's Beth Krom for Congress $50 a head fundraiser billed as "Balance with Beth." The invitation thanked people for bringing "positive energy" to her campaign. It was a chance to do yoga with the city councilwoman who hopes to take on Congressman John Campbell in November 2010. After what I expect was some stretching and a long "Oooooommmmm," the invitation said Councilwoman Krom was going to give an update on her recent trip to Washington (D.C. I assume).
Krom will need to do yoga with a lot of people at $50 a pop to raise the funds necessary to compete for real.
Bond or bed
Irvine's Sen. Tom Harman cast an important vote to approve a multi-billion dollar statewide water bond last week. But his vote came about 40 minutes late because he had left the Capitol building to get some rest at his nearby home while his colleagues pulled an all-nighter. The senator was feeling a bit under the weather, according to his staff, and had arraigned to be notified when the vote was about to take place, but someone forgot to call him. A well-rested Harman walked into the Senate Chamber with a bit of embarrassment at his tardiness.
