Dingell on Pistachio Recall

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments today about the recall of Pistachios due to potential salmonella contamination.

“Yesterday we learned that yet again, another food product has been pulled from our grocery store shelves due to contamination. Today it is pistachios.  Over the last two months it was peanut products, and before then, spinach, tomatoes, and jalapeños. The American people are rightly concerned and need a restored confidence in our food supply. This latest outbreak is just further evidence that we need to act now to strengthen the FDA and protect American consumers from dangerous food items.

“I have introduced legislation, the Food and Drug Administration Globalization Act, which would give the FDA the proper authorities and a consistent stream of resources it needs to ensure safety of our food supply.  It would also require companies have safety procedures in place to prevent future outbreaks.

“Over the next coming months, I will be working with my colleagues in Congress to get this bill to the President's desk.  The American people deserve nothing less than absolute confidence that the food they put on their tables is free of contamination.”
