Cummings Pleased To Finally See Help Come For Unemployed Americans
Congressman joins colleagues in vote to help those who lost their job through no fault of their own.
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07) today was pleased to join his House colleagues in voting for H.R.4213, the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act. The bill returned to the House of Representatives Tuesday after passing the Senate.
H.R. 4213 will extend unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to millions of Americans families. This is urgently needed after weeks of Senate Republicans’ ongoing obstruction of job creating legislation that extended critical unemployment insurance benefits to help Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
“We cannot allow people who have lost everything to have their hope taken as well,” said Cummings. “Nearly two million American families were without their economic lifeline thanks to Republican obstruction in the Senate. I am happy to finally get a chance to help these Americans; most of whom have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
“Every dollar we spend today returns almost double that amount into our economy. Withthe action we took today, we are keeping families in their homes, avoiding the deterioration of our workforce potential, and continuing the tradition of empathy that Americans have always shown for those in need.”
H.R. 4213 will extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefits programs through November 30, 2010.The legislation retroactively restores benefits to people who may have started losing their benefits as early as the end of May.
