Cummings Concerned With Jobs Plateau

 Cummings Concerned With Jobs Plateau

Private sector jobs increase and total unemployment decrease in June, while government sheds jobs.

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07), a senior member of the Joint Economic Committee, today released a statement following the announcement by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that while unemployment is down to 9.5 percent, 125,000 people lost their jobs last month.

Private industry added 83,000 positions, but those additions were overshadowed by 208,000 government positions being cut, including a large number of Census workers who finished their temporary employment.

“It is clear that the inability of the Senate to pass the major job creation and tax credit programs passed by House Democrats is having an effect,” said Cummings. “We are still creating private sector jobs, but not enough of them. This week, I was proud to see the House Conference report on Wall Street Reform accepted and approved. We have made major changes on Wall Street, helping to ensure that the financial catastrophe, which cost so many jobs, will never happen again.

“However, it is not enough. People on Main Street are still losing their homes. They are clearly still losing their jobs. We cannot allow them to lose hope. When we return from the July 4th holiday, we must continue to help free up credit, encourage job growth, and put America back to work. One job lost is one too many.”
