Cummings Thanks Teachers For Their Hard Work And Service

Congressman motivated by educators throughout his life.

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, (MD-07) today celebrated National Teacher Day, as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week.

“Other than my parents, my teachers have had the greatest impact on my life,” said Cummings. “From my time as a student at Baltimore City College High School, to studying at Howard University and attending law school at University of Maryland, teachers and professors taught me academic lessons, but they also provided life lessons and mentorship. My fondest memory of an educator is of my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Hollis Posey. He was the person who convinced me that I could achieve anything if I worked hard and simply believed.”

Tuesday, May 4th is National Teacher Day and Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2 – May 8. National Teacher Day, sponsored by the National Education Association, is a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives. The theme for National Teacher Day is “Great Teachers Make Great Public Schools.”

The Democratic-led 111th Congress recognizes the critical role that K-12 education plays in creating a strong new foundation for the American economy. The Congress has enacted two key bills with critical investments in K-12 education: the Recovery Act and the FY 2010 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. In addition, in December, the House passed the Jobs for Main Street Act, which includes a critical $23 billion Education Jobs Fund that would prevent the layoffs of tens of thousands of teachers in the coming school year if the Senate passes it and it is signed into law.

Cummings voted for each of these three bills.
