Cummings Pleased To Extend Unemployment Insurance
Congressman votes to extend unemployment insurance, COBRA, other programs.
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07) today voted “yea” on H.R. 4851, the Continuing Extension Act of 2010. The bill, amended by the Senate and passed today, extends unemployment and COBRA benefits for Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Benefits will be extended until the beginning of May, retroactively.
The bill passed the House by a final vote of 289-112.
“I am pleased that the Senate finally approved support for the middle class workers of America who have been victims of the recession,” said Cummings. “We are recovering, thanks to the Democratic recovery efforts, and thanks to the perseverance of businesses and workers throughout America. However, millions of our countrymen and women are still out of work, and the wasted potential of just one person is one too many.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that 162,000 American workers returned to work last month, though unemployment remained at 9.7 percent. Despite this good news, more than 15 million Americans remained unemployed.
“Now that we have protected Americans who want to work for one more month, my colleagues must help pass the Local Jobs for America Act, to help address the causes of chronic unemployment. Along with the Local Jobs for America Act, I will keep fighting for small businesses, fighting to keep people in their homes and fighting to create good jobs. Our plan is working and we must keep fighting to bring America all the way back.”
