Whitfield Statement on Vote to Adjourn Congress

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) released the following statement today after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team passed a Resolution which will allow the House of Representatives to adjourn until November 15. Whitfield voted against the Resolution.

“Just this week we learned the grim news that the poverty rate is up 1.3 percent in Kentucky. Sadly, this is a trend mirrored across the country. Yet, instead of passing legislation which will cut taxes, spur economic growth and create new jobs, House Speaker Pelosi and her leadership team have decided to pack up shop and go home.

“Now is the time for leadership, not retreat. Congress should stay in session to preserve existing tax cuts, pass a budget and complete work on the dozen appropriations bills it so far has neglected to address. Should these tax reductions be allowed to expire January 1, the average family in the First Congressional District will see their taxes raised by an estimated $1,282. Kentuckians simply cannot afford this. With a record high national debt, it is essential we lay out a blueprint to get our government’s financial House in order. Congress’s work is not finished and I urge Speaker Pelosi to keep the House in session and address these important matters.”
