Anderson County

Anderson County, the eighty-second county in order of formation, is located in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky. The county is bounded by Spencer, Shelby, Franklin, Woodford, Nelson, Mercer, and Washington counties and covers 204 square miles. Lawrenceburg, incorporated in 1820 as Lawrence, is the county seat. Bourbon County

Bourbon County, the fifth county in order of formation, is located in the central Bluegrass region, and has an area of 292 square miles. Its boundaries originally extended northward to the Ohio River and eastward to the Big Sandy, taking in land that has since been split into more than thirty counties. View More

Boyle County

Boyle County, the ninety­-fourth in order of formation, is located in the Blue­grass region. It is bordered by Casey, Garrard, Marion, Mercer, and Washington counties and has an area of 182 square miles. View More

Clark County

Clark County, the fourteenth formed, is located on the eastern edge of the Bluegrass region. It is bordered by Fayette, Bourbon, Montgomery, Powell, Estill, and Madison counties and has an area of 255 square miles. Clark County was formed from sections of Bourbon and Fayette counties in 1792 and was named for Gen. George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War hero. The county seat is Winchester. View More

Estill County

Estill County, the fiftieth in order of formation, was established on February 19, 1808, from parts of Clark and Madison counties. It was named in honor of Capt. James Estill, who was killed by Indians during Estill's Defeat on March 22, 1782. View More

Fayette County

Fayette is one of the three original counties formed by Virginia on June 30, 1780. With a land area of 280 square miles, the central Bluegrass County is bordered by Jessamine, Woodford, Scott, Bourbon, and Clark counties; the Kentucky River forms the southern boundary with Madison County. Franklin County

Franklin County, the eighteenth in order of formation, is located in central Kentucky in the Bluegrass region. The county is bordered by Anderson, Henry, Owen, Scott, Shelby, and Woodford counties and has an area of 212 square miles. View More

Garrard County

Garrard County, the twenty-fifth in order of formation, is located in the Outer Bluegrass region of central Kentucky. It is bordered by Boyle, Mercer, Jessamine, Madison, Rockcastle, and Lincoln counties and has an area of 232 square miles. View More

Jessamine County

The thirty-sixth county in order of formation, Jessamine County is located in the Inner Bluegrass region of central Kentucky. Formed on December 19, 1798, from a portion of Fayette, the 174-square-mile county is bordered by Garrard, Madison, Mercer, Woodford, and Fayette counties. View More

Lincoln County

Lincoln County is one of three counties created by Virginia in 1780. As settlements in Kentucky County of Virginia became increasingly numerous during the late 1770s, the need for seats of government within the vast territory led to the formation of Jefferson, Lincoln, and Fayette counties to replace Kentucky County. Madison County

Madison County, the sixth county in order of formation, is located in Central Kentucky, where the Bluegrass meets the foothills of the Appalachians. The 443-square-mile area is bounded by Fayette, Clark, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Garrard, and Jessamine counties. View More

Mercer County

Mercer County, the sixth county in order of formation, is located in central Kentucky. Bordered by Anderson, Boyle, Garrard, Jessamine, Washington, and Woodford counties, it has an area of 250 square miles. View More

Montgomery County

Montgomery County, the twenty-second county in order of formation, was created on December 14, 1796. It is located east of Lexington in the outer Bluegrass region and is bounded by Clark, Bourbon, Bath, Menifee, and Powell counties. View More

Powell County

The 101st county in order of formation, Powell County is located in eastern Kentucky and is bordered by Lee, Menifee, and Wolfe counties; it has an area of 180 square miles. The county was formed on January 7, 1852, out of portions of Clark, Estill, and Montgomery counties. View More

Scott County

Scott County, the eleventh county in order of formation, is located in north-central Kentucky. It is bounded by Owen, Grant, Harrison, Bourbon, Fayette, Woodford, and Franklin counties and contains 286 square miles. View More

Woodford County

The ninth Kentucky county and the last organized by Virginia prior to Kentucky's separation, Woodford County was created from Fayette on November 12, 1788. It is bordered by Anderson, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Mercer, and Scott counties. View More
