Capps Statement in Honor of Earth Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Capps released the following statement in honor of tomorrow’s celebration of the 39th Earth Day:

“As someone who represents one of the most beautiful areas in America I know that everyday is Earth Day.  But the important thing about this week’s celebration of the 39th annual Earth Day is that it may very well mark a turning point for our nation.  Our country is finally poised to begin addressing our longstanding energy issues and the problem of global warming that is threatening the health of our planet.

“We simply must transition to a clean energy future, one where we use less energy and get more of what we use from renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass.  We cannot continue to rely so heavily on fossil fuels to run our cars and trucks, or to light, heat and cool our homes and businesses.  And we certainly can’t do it as wastefully as we have done in the past.

“The good news is that while America may not have the most oil and gas reserves, we do have the most creative and enterprising people in the world.  Already on the Central and South Coasts we see more hybrid cars on the road, businesses developing clean energy technologies, and an increased emphasis on adopting more sustainable lifestyles.  The energy crises that have plagued our country over the years offer us an opportunity to create millions of new “green jobs” and rebuild our economy.  And by breaking this fossil fuel addiction, we will not only slow and then stop global warming we will also lower overall energy costs and enhance our national security.”
