Capps Announces Local Grants Made Possible by Economic Recovery Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had awarded several Homeless Prevention grants to Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.  The grants were provided as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (H.R.1) which was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama last week.

“We are facing an unprecedented economic crisis that is hurting families up and down the Central and South Coast,” said Capps.  “Congress worked quickly with President Obama to pass a much needed economic recovery package earlier this month and barely a week after it was signed into law we are already seeing the benefits of this bill here in our communities.  These grants to help families hard hit by the downturn in our economy is just one important step on our path back to a full recovery.  I want families to know that we haven’t forgotten you and we’re working hard everyday to provide the hand up – not the handout – to get folks back on their feet and get our economy back on track.  In the coming days and weeks Congress will continue to work closely with President Obama to tackle the serious challenges facing our nation.”

Ventura County received a $826,094 grant, the City of Oxnard received a $1,124,994 grant, Santa Barbara County received a $829,013 grant, the City of Santa Maria received a $521,839 grant and San Luis Obispo County received a $855,184 grant through the 2009 Recovery Act Homeless Prevention Grant Program.  The funding will provide financial and other assistance to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless and help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed and stabilized.  The funds under this program are intended to target individuals and families who would be homeless without this assistance.  The funds provide for a variety of assistance including: short-term or medium-term rental assistance and housing relocation and stabilization services, including such activities as mediation, security or utility deposits, utility payments, moving cost assistance, and case management.
