Senate Passes Legislation that Includes Capps Bill to Preserve Piedras Blancas Light Station

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps today celebrated the Senate’s passage of S. 2739, the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 which includes her bill H.R. 276, the Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station Outstanding Natural Area Act.  Capps’ legislation to preserve the Piedras Blancas Light Station was approved by the House last year as a stand alone measure.  She will be urging her House colleagues to quickly pass S. 2739 so the package of public lands bills can go to the President for his approval.

“The Piedras Blancas Light Station is a tremendous asset to our community and my legislation will help protect this treasure for future generations,” said Capps.  “Designating the light station as an Outstanding National Area will provide greater protection and additional resources for future preservation efforts.  The Senate’s vote of approval today is a significant step forward as we work to make this bill law.  I’m hopeful the House will quickly approve this package of important public land bills and the President will sign it into law.”

Congresswoman Capps’ legislation would designate the Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station as an Outstanding Natural Area, and place it under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management’s National Landscape Conservation System.   Designating the Piedras Blancas Light Station as an Outstanding Natural Area will offer enhanced protection for the site as well as providing access to additional federal funding for repairs and restoration projects.  It will also serve as a means to increase public awareness of the Light Station’s scientific, cultural and educational values. Capps has been working closely with a coalition of local, state, and federal officials, community members and the Bureau of Land Management to preserve the Light Station and the surrounding areas.

Yesterday Capps met with Mike Pool, State Director of the Bureau of Land Management to discuss the conservation efforts underway at the Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station.
