Whitfield Suggests Ways to Reform Congress

In a November 16, 2010 letter to The Honorable Rob Bishop and The Honorable Doc Hastings, Congressman Ed Whitfield writes: "Dear Representatives Bishop and Hastings: The American people have spoken and we must heed their calls and reform the way that the House of Representatives does business. In listening to many of my constituents, others in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and around the nation, I have prepared a list of suggestions which I request be taken into consideration when drafting the rules for the 112th Congress in the House. I believe we all need to take steps to rein in our debt and make absolutely sure that we know the impact our laws will have on our nation, but we cannot do this without drastic changes. I have listed these reforms below for your consideration...Read more

Letter to the Editor: Whitfield Honors Veterans

Dear Editor,From the Minutemen who fought in the Revolutionary War – to the soldiers who are today trying to establish peace in the Middle East – the United States has always been blessed with a military force that is without equal. While no single tribute could fully repay the debt we owe them, Veterans Day at least offers a chance for our nation to stand together in honoring the men and women who have served our country. It is my privilege to represent the veterans of the First Congressional District of Kentucky.  Their devotion and love for this country have left an undeniable imprint on America, even though they often consider their own service a humble duty. Our Armed Forces have always done whatever it takes to keep our freedoms, liberties, and our homeland safe.  So today, on Veterans Day, I want to renew my promise to take every action necessary that......Read more

Congressman Whitfield's '10 Steps to a Healthier America'

Congressman Whitfield has proposed "10 Steps to A Healthier America,' a package of initiatives that will increase access to quality healthcare and services while lowering costs for all Americans. 1. Make Insurance Affordable for All Americans: To ensure all Americans have access to quality healthcare, we need to provide refundable tax credits to individuals and families to purchase insurance. Principles to Reform and Restore Faith in Congress

Every day I hear from Kentuckians who are unhappy with the way Washington continues to conduct business and who have become disheartened with the political process. I share many of their frustrations. For that reason I have put together a package of principles which will increase transparency, rein in federal spending, ensure Congress follows its own rules and make certain elected officials are held to the highest ethical standard. I urge my colleagues in Congress to adopt these measures immediately so that we can begin to win back the faith of the American people....Read more

Whitfield's Action Plan to Put Kentuckians Back to Work

With Kentucky's unemployment rate sitting at over 10%, and even higher than that in many counties in the First Congressional District, creating jobs must be our top priority in Washington. A Taxpayers' Guide to Uncle Sam's Checkbook

Many Kentuckians have questions about the state of the U.S. government's finances. All citizens of this country should have a firm understanding of where our country garners its revenue from; where it spends its money; and what the state of our checkbook is today. For this reason, I have created a simple outline to our government's budget that I hope my fellow Kentuckians will find useful....Read more

Congressional Art Competition

I am currently accepting submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition, entitled An Artistic Discovery, from high school students in the First Congressional District interested in having their work put on display in the U.S. Capitol. Every day, thousands of visitors, staff and Members of Congress pass through the tunnel to the Capitol where the work of winners of the Congressional Art Competition are put on display. It is truly an honor for a student to have their work exhibited in this auspicious location and I encourage all interested students from the First District to submit their work for consideration.

Supporting Our Troops

For the past fifteen years I have had the privilege and honor of representing the thousands of brave men and women stationed at Fort Campbell who serve our country. While we owe these soldiers and their families a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay, it is essential we do all that we can to support them.

One way we can show our support for our military members and their families is through the adoption of Army Community Covenants. The Covenant was established on April 17, 2008 and encourages towns, counties and states to develop programs and initiatives that aid military members and their families. ...Read more
