Congressman Marchant Hosts Academy Fair

Academy Day Fair 2010

Irving, Texas, Sep 30 -

U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) hosted a forum Monday at Cedar Hill High School to provide information for high school students who want to pursue an appointment to one of the nation’s esteemed military service academies.

More than 70 students and parents from the 24th District attended the event to hear from representatives of various service academies. The forum provided a wide range of insight, from eligibility requirements for admissions to the rigorous schedule undertaken once enrolled as a student.

In addition, representatives from interdisciplinary and preparatory schools were in attendance including Army ROTC, Navy ROTC, Air Force ROTC, New Mexico Military Academy, Texas A&M Corp of Cadets, and Greystone Preparatory School.

Each year the five service academies give appointments to the most deserving nominees from each congressional district. The five academies include the Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Naval, and the Military Academy at West Point. All prospective appointees, except those attending the Coast Guard, must receive a nomination from his or her U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, or the Office of the Vice President.

"Through the premier education and training at the service academies, men and women are equipped to become our nation’s future leaders and defenders of freedom," said Marchant. "It is an honor and privilege to nominate exceptional students from the 24th District to these prestigious academies."

All academies maintain rigorous standards and low acceptance rates, and it is considered an honor to be offered an appointment. On average, the monetary value of each education is approximately $400,000.
