The remarks were delivered in advance of the Fourth Meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, which is taking place this week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  Assistant Secretary Schwartz will represent the United States at the Forum, where high-level government representatives from more than 130 countries will discuss issues affecting migrant populations globally in order to enhance the positive impact of migration on development.  Assistant Secretary Schwartz’s Remarks»   


Humanitarian Diplomacy at the UN in New York and Geneva and Mission to Pakistan and Afghanistan

Schwartz talks to Pakistani men. - State Dept ImageIn September and October, Assistant Secretary Eric Schwartz held high-level diplomatic meetings at the United Nations in New York and Geneva to advance specific humanitarian objectives with bilateral and multilateral partners.

He later traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan between October 8th and 12th. In Pakistan, he discussed issues relating to Afghan refugees, some 1.6 million of whom are registered in Pakistan. He also visited Pakistanis who have been displaced by conflict. In Afghanistan, his visits focused on former Afghan refugees that have returned to the country. Read More» Photo Gallery»

A refugee is a person who has been forced from his or her home and crossed an international border for safety. He or she must have a well-founded fear of persecution in his or her native country, on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

The. U.S. government provides assistance largely through the multilateral system in order to maximize impact and minimize duplication. Our major partners include the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Organization for Migration, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA).
