The proposed project will provide hurricane and storm damage reduction along the shoreline of the Town of Topsail Beach and a very small section of the Town of Surf City. The majority of storm reduction benefits will be accrued by the Town of Topsail Beach. With the exception of the dune areas, the entire town is subject to hurricane and storm surge flooding. The storm damage reduction and economic benefits for this project are critical to this area. Major storms in the 1990s contributed to damage of numerous properties in the project area. Additionally, the beach nourishment will restore nesting habitat for a variety of sea turtles as well as feeding habitat for piping plover.
