Humane Society of Berks County Walktoberfest - Jim joins State Representative David Kessler and Humane Society Executive Director Karel Minor at Walktoberfest, which raised more than $100,000 for the Humane Society. Conservation Tax Incentive Reception - On Tuesday June 10, the Conservation Tax Incentive Coalition presented an award to Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-PA) for his leadership in renewing a key conservation tax incentive. The Center received a $347,632 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to continue funding a four county (Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, and Chester Counties) collaborative effort to provide civil legal services to rape, sexual assault and stalking victims through the Crime Victim’s Law Project. The funding will be used to: hire new staff to review more cases; increase outreach and legal services to minority and immigrant populations; and collaborate with local law schools to expand an existing legal internship program. This program is in its 5th year and for the first four years the project was administered by Bucks County. The county organizations have agreed to rotate responsibility for administration of the grant. This grant will be used over the course of two years. Norristown Transportation Project Receives Federal Funding - Norristown -- Congressman Jim Gerlach announced today that he had secured $9.62 million in federal transportation funds for the extension of Lafayette Street and connection with the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Gerlach announces $9.62 million for Lafayette Street extension in Norristown - Congressman Jim Gerlach announced procurement of $9.62 million in federal highway transit dollars for the extension of Lafayette Street in Norristown. According to the Montgomery County Planning Commission, the total cost of the Lafayette Street extension project is approximately $120 million and will include a partnership of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Turnpike and federal funds. With the federal dollars announced by Congressman Gerlach on Sept. 6, the County now has almost $22 million committed to finish the project’s preliminary engineering and final design work. The County is scheduled to complete preliminary engineering by the end of 2006, complete final design by 2008, start the right of way and utility work in 2008, and begin the project with the reconstruction of existing Lafayette in the early part of 2009. Gerlach presents Coatesville with federal Weed and Seed money (April 4) - COATESVILLE -- Congressman Jim Gerlach joined U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan on Monday in presenting Coatesville with $175,000 for the city’s Weed and Seed initiative. As a Weed and Seed program participant, Coatesville receives federal and state dollars to help “weed” out crime from the community as they also recieve dollars to “seed” the area for long-term economic growth and development. Coatesville was designated a Pennsylvania Weed and Seed community in 2001 and, in 2004, it received the federal distinction as well. Weed and Seed is a U.S. Department of Justice community-based initiative designed as an innovative and comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. Rep. Gerlach presents a homeland security grant to the Perkiomen Fire Co. (March 30) - Wed., March 30 -- Rep. Jim Gerlach was in Montgomery County to present the Perkiomen Twp. Fire Co. with a federal grant totaling $61,016. The money from the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will be used by the fire company to purchase 16 self contained breathing apparatus (air packs). Rep. Gerlach meets with Montgomery County students (March 10) - WASHINGTON -- Four Pottstown area students recently won a $25,000 Christopher Columbus Foundation Community Grant for work they did developing a scanner system that flags products containing any of eight different allergens that go by up to 72 different names depending on the manufacturer. The students, standing here with Rep. Gerlach following a visit to his Washington DC office, hope to turn their scanner system into a real product with the grant. Rep. Arc of Montgomery County moves ahead with federal funding for building project (Feb. 28) - Friday, Feb. 25 -- Rep. Jim Gerlach presented officials with the Arc of Montgomery County with $250,000 from the federal government to help the organization build a new facility. The funding was included in the FY '05 appropriations bill. Rep. Gerlach presents funding for Phoenixville restoration efforts (March 4) - Friday, March 4 -- Rep. Jim Gerlach presented officials from the Phoenixville Area Economic Development Corporation with a mock check for $223,673 to help with the restoration of the historic Foundry building. Chester County business breaks ground on new facility (July 19) - EXTON -- Rep. Jim Gerlach spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kensey Nash Corporation headquarters in the Eagleville Corporate Center. The Chester County-based medical device company currently has 300 employees and needs the additional space the new facility will provide to accommodate its plans for hiring more than 250 new employees in the next five years. Kensey Nash is a leader in cardiovascular medical technologies with significant experience and expertise in the design, development, manufacture and processing of resorbable biomaterials for medical applications. The students were in town for the day sightseeing. Visiting the annual Coatesville ice cream social (July 10) - COATESVILLE -- Rep. Jim Gerlach aides Habitat for Humanity volunteers in building a new home in Downingtown. Since 1976, Habitat has built and rehabilitated more than 150,000 homes around the world, provding more than 750,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent and affordable shelter. Habitiat is a non-profit organization that sells the new homes to familes at cost, setting up low-interest loans but requiring a substantial investment of "sweat equity," as all families are required to help in the construction of their new home. Tour of the Higlands Stewardship Area (April 12) - BIRDSBORO -- Standing under an umbrella held by Berks County Conservancy Executive Director Verlin Renner, Rep. Jim Gerlach addresses a crowd before a recent tour of parts of the Highlands Stewardship Area. The Highlands area is a more than two million-acre forested region stretching from Reading through northern New Jersey, southern New York and western Connecticut. The region provides and protects the drinking water supplies for over 15 million residents of the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Rep. Gerlach co-sponsored legislation that would increase funding for land conservation partnerships throughout the area. The bill, H.R. 1964, passed the House on November 21 of last year and is now awaiting action in the Senate. Rep. Gerlach hosts a Medicare prescription drug workshop (April 6) - POTTSTOWN -- Rep. Jim Gerlach talked to a crowd of senior citizens at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center today about the new prescription drug benefit Congress added to Medicare last year. The new service will provide prescription drug coverage to millions of seniors and will effect the state's successful prescription drug plans. Joining Rep. Gerlach was Leslie Norwalk, deputy administrator for the Center for Medicare Services. Coatesville Receives Federal Weed and Seed Designation (March 8) - COATESVILLE -- Rep. Jim Gerlach discusses Coatesville's inclusion in the federal Weed and Seed program with state Rep. Tim Hennesey, right. Coatesville joins Reading as the two 6th District communities to earn the distinction as federal Weed and Seed sites. The title qualifies Coatesville for federal funding to help fight crime, remove blight and restore its neighborhoods. Berks County mass transit agency receives federal funding (Feb. 23) - READING -- Rep. Joe Pitts, Rep. Rep. Gerlach announces funding for Phoenixville (Feb. 10) - PHOENIXVILLE -- Rep. Visiting the dentists at the West Chester Give Kids a Smile Day event (Feb. 6) - WEST CHESTER -- Rep. Jim Gerlach talked with volunteers during the second annual Give Kids A Smile Day event at the Community Volunteers in Medicine facility in West Chester. Sponsored by the American Dental Association, the national event was held on Feb. 6 to provide free dental care to underinsured and needy children. Rep. Rep. Gerlach joins in announcing grant money for Chester County (Oct. 14) - EAST WHITELAND -- Roy Bernardi, deputy secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, announces to the crowd gathered at the former Worthington Steel site off Route 202 that Chester County had received $7 million in grants and guaranteed loans to redevelop the former industrial property into retail space. Officials estimate that the project will create 280 new jobs, as 112,000-square-feet of retail space is built along with a 250-car parking garage. Montgomery County brownsfield project earns HUD grant money (Oct. 15) - NORRISTOWN -- Rep. Jim Gerlach joined Roy Bernardi, deputy secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, in announcing $4.5 million in grants and guaranteed loans for Montgomery County. The money will be used to cleanup and transform the heavily-contaminated Nicolet industrial site in Norristown into 120,000 square feet of light industrial and commercial space. Officials estimate that 120 jobs will be created by the project. Rep. Gerlach joins 6th District residents at a rally for the new veterans cemetery (Oct. 16) - SPRING CITY -- More than 100 people attended a rally calling for the new veterans cemetery to be located at the former Pennhurst State Hospital in neighboring East Vincent. Rep. Jim Gerlach and several state and federal officials addressed the crowd about the need for locating a new veterans cemetery in the area. Legislation introduced by Rep. Gerlach and signed into law last year by the president called for the placement of a new veterans cemetery in southeastern Pennsylvania. Amity Fire Co. grant presentation (Feb. 3) - Congressman Gerlach held a press conference today announcing a $225,000 grant for the Amity Fire Department.
