The Congressional Award, established in 1979 by Public Law 96-114, is open to all young people ages 14-23 throughout the United States and is the highest honor bestowed upon America’s youth. To date, more than 6,500 Congressional Awards have been earned, representing well over 1.5 million volunteer hours performed in community service across the United States. The Congressional Award is non-competitive. Recipients do not win the award; they earn the award. To achieve a Congressional Medal, a participant must set and achieve challenging goals in four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. In reaching this goal, Chris has logged a minimum of 100 hours of voluntary public service, 50 hours of personal development, 50 hours of physical fitness, and has participated in one overnight expedition. The Congressional Award program is a nonpartisan partnership between Congress and the private sector. Appointed by the Joint Leadership of Congress, a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of both private sector individuals and members of Congress, implements the program on the national level. To register to earn the Congressional Award, call 1-888-80-AWARD or visit the website at www.congressionalaward.org. Rep.
