House Republican Leader John Boehner tapped U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland to lead a newly created Census Task Force at the beginning of the 111th Congress.

"The House Republican Census Task Force is committed to providing oversight and accountability for this vital function of our federal government -- one of few direct actions required explicitly by the U.S. Constitution," Westmoreland said. "We will ensure that the government has the resources and the right plan in place to count every person in this country, and we will also fight any efforts to estimate population numbers with 'sampling.' We will work with the administration to see that the Census Bureau partners with ethical, legal and trustworthy partners to assist in the count and to implement the census process to the letter of federal law."

The task force includes members from all of the House Committees that share jurisdiction over the census.

From House Oversight and Government Reform are Ranking Member Darrell Issa (Calif.) and census subcommittee Ranking Member Patrick McHenry (N.C.). Westmoreland is also a member of the committee and the census subcommittee.

Ranking Member Dan Lungren (Calif.) and Rep. Gregg Harper (Miss.) hail from the House Administration Committee.

Ranking Member Lamar Smith (Texas) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (Wis.) represent the Judiciary Committee.
