Rules Committee Announces Monday Meeting For Child Safety & Youth Violence Legislation

Rules Committee Announces Monday Meeting For
Child Safety & Youth Violence Legislation

WASHINGTON - House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) announced the Rules Committee will meet Monday, June 14th at 2:00 p.m. in Room H-313 of the Capitol to develop the rule for H.R. 1501, legislation addressing youth violence and children's safety. The following is Dreier's statement:

"The tragic violence in our nation's schools has clearly struck a chord with all Americans, and I am convinced that every Member of this House is trying to address it in a constructive way. There are no clear cut answers here, and there is a great diversity of opinion about how to proceed legislatively. The American people know this is an emotional and complex issue which demands a measured and thoughtful response.

"I am confident that debate on the children's safety legislation will allow Members to vote on amendments intended to deal with all of the facets of juvenile crime concerns, including protecting our children from violent images, providing stiffer sentences for youth offenders, new community juvenile justice funding and certain gun restrictions to protect our nation's youth.

"I believe that the legislation to be considered by the House next week will be an appropriate, firm and comprehensive response to the problem of youth violence and achildren's safety."
