Klobuchar Receives Award from National Farmers Union

September 15, 2010

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar received the Golden Triangle Award yesterday from Minnesota farmers during the National Farmers Union (NFU) Annual Legislative Fly-In. The NFU presents awards to members of Congress who have demonstrated leadership on issues relevant to America’s family farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and rural communities.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” Klobuchar said.  “I know that Minnesota’s prosperity depends on supporting and strengthening farms and rural communities throughout the state, and I look forward to continuing my work with the National Farmers Union.”

“These leaders were selected because they exhibit similar principles and policies of Farmers Union and have been exemplary advocates for family farmers and ranchers,” said NFU President Roger Johnson. “We are pleased to honor those who have proven to be true allies of our organization and our members across the country.”

NFU was formed in 1902 to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. The Golden Triangle Award is based on the NFU symbol – a triangle with “legislation” and “cooperation” forming the sides and “education” as the base. This year’s Golden Triangle recipients were selected for their leadership on a variety of issues, including the Farm Bill, energy, and financial market reform.

Klobuchar is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and is chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion.  On Tuesday, Klobuchar joined Rep. Collin Peterson  and members of the NFU to call for passage of the Travel Restriction and Export Enhancement Act, which would boost U.S. agriculture by easing restrictions on the sale of homegrown food and commodities to Cuba.  If enacted, the bill is estimated to create 23,000 jobs for the U.S. travel industry and could increase U.S. exports to Cuba by nearly $500 million a year.
