Klobuchar Statement on the Death of Judge Gerald Heaney

June 22, 2010

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar issued today the following statement after news that Minnesota-native and former federal appeals court judge Gerald Heaney had passed away at the age of 92:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Judge Heaney, one of the most influential legal minds in Minnesota’s history. My thoughts and prayers are with his family today.

Judge Heaney was inspired by a powerful belief in the equality and dignity of all people before the law – and by a deep, abiding sense of fairness and an intense determination to do what’s right. Throughout his career, Judge Heaney always demonstrated a fierce dedication to the principle of equal opportunity for all Americans, regardless of their background.

In my first year in the Senate, I was honored to introduce and help pass legislation naming the federal building in Duluth the ‘Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building and Courthouse.’ It is fitting that this building will stand as a testament to Judge Heaney’s many contributions to our legal system and to our state and nation.”
