Klobuchar Statement on the Recall of Nearly 12 Million Collectable Drinking Glasses Containing Cadmium

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement today after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and McDonalds recalled nearly 12 million “Shrek Forever After 3D” collectable drinking glasses due to potential cadmium risks.  

“More and more children’s products are showing up with this dangerous metal that can cause serious health problems.  We need to conduct a full investigation into children’s products that that contain cadmium and make sure this toxic metal stays out of the hands of our kids once and for all,” said Klobuchar. 

The “Shrek Forever After 3D” collectable drinking glasses are 16 ounce glasses were sold exclusively at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide from May 2010 to June 2010 for about $2.  The designs on the glasses contain cadmium. 

Earlier this year, Klobuchar joined Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) to introduce the Safe Kids’ Jewelry Act in an effort to ban the use of cadmium, barium, and antimony in jewelry marketed for children ages 12 and under. Studies have shown that direct exposure to cadmium, a known carcinogen, can lead to kidney disease, developmental and reproductive health problems, and if ingested, hinder brain development.  Children’s growing bodies absorb these metals at higher rates than adults do, and long-term exposure increases the risks that the poison will seriously impair a child’s health.
