Klobuchar Announces Law Enforcement Leader with 30 Years Experience Nominated to Serve as U.S. Marshal

October 13, 2009

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar announced today that her recommendation to serve as the next U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota, Sharon Lubinski, has been nominated by President Obama.

Lubinski, a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, currently serves as the Assistant Police Chief of Minneapolis.  Last year, Lubinski was a member of the Minneapolis Police planning team that provided security for the Republican National Convention.  She was also a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force from 2004 to 2006.

Lubinski’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.  Klobuchar serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for reviewing the nomination.

“Sharon Lubinski’s mix of experience managing a large, urban police department and working in a more rural sheriff’s office sets her apart and makes her uniquely qualified to serve in this new role,” said Klobuchar.  “During my eight years as Hennepin County Attorney, I had the opportunity to work with Sharon on an almost daily basis.  I observed firsthand the strength of her leadership abilities and the respect she commands from people at every level of law enforcement and in the larger community.”

“It would be a great honor for me to serve Minnesota as the United States Marshal,” said Lubinski.  “During my 30-year career, I’ve actively partnered with federal law enforcement agencies in many different capacities.  The U.S. Marshal has a uniquely important role as the chief enforcement officer of the federal courts, charged with ensuring the safety and effective functioning of our justice system.”

Earlier this year, in order to help her in her search for a recommendation to President Obama, Klobuchar enlisted an interview committee, chaired by retired Bloomington police chief John Laux.

“We conducted interviews with many highly qualified candidates,” Laux said.  “It reaffirmed my belief that Minnesota has among the very finest law enforcement leaders in the country.  Sharon Lubinski is right there at the top.”

Since 2006, Lubinski has served as the Assistant Police Chief for Minneapolis.  Earlier she served as a patrol officer, lieutenant, precinct commander and deputy chief with the Minneapolis Police.  From 1978 to 1986, she served as a deputy with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin.

Klobuchar also thanked current U.S. Marshal Michael McGinn for his fine service to and leadership of the agency over the past year.  “Marshal McGinn has been very helpful during this period of transition and I am glad he will be staying in this position until the transition is completed,” said Klobuchar.

The U.S. Marshals Service is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice.  Its responsibilities include protecting federal court officials and buildings, apprehending wanted fugitives and protecting federal witnesses.
