Klobuchar to Hold Public Roundtable on Elder Care in Willmar

August 21, 2009

Willmar, MN – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar will host a public roundtable with representatives from the caregiving and care service community to discuss how to best help relieve the burden on older Americans and those who care for them.

The roundtable will include Tony Ogdahl, Interim Administrator at Rice Care Center, Bunne Frost-Johnston, Outreach Director at Better Health and Housing, Becky Hauptli, who is a caregiver for her parents, and Bev Abbett, who helps care for her parents. Mike Schramm, Chief Executive Officer at Rice Memorial Hospital will also be participating in the event.

Klobuchar recently introduced three pieces of federal legislation designed to support family caregivers and protect consumers from abuses in long-term care insurance. Klobuchar also supports legislation introduced by Senators Cantwell and Kohl regarding long-term care and the issue will be an important part of the national health care reform debate in the fall.

Between 2005 and 2035, Minnesota’s population over age 65 will more than double (from 623,200 to 1.4 million), according to the Minnesota State Demographic Center.  Minnesota’s 85 and older population is also expected to more than double in the same period (from 103,000 to 222,000).
