Klobuchar Amendment to Support Dairy Farmers Passes Senate

Klobuchar continues efforts to help Minnesota's dairy farmers during these difficult economic times

August 4, 2009

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Senate today passed an amendment cosponsored by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar to provide additional relief to dairy farmers struggling with plummeting dairy prices.  Klobuchar, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has actively worked to help support dairy farmers.

Last week, she announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will increase the amount paid for dairy products through the Dairy Product Price Support Program.  This amendment added additional funds.

“Dairy farmers across Minnesota are hurting right now,” said Klobuchar.  “We need to support them during these difficult economic times.  This legislation is another important step to provide additional relief for our dairy farmers.”

The amendment, which Klobuchar sponsored with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, provides the U.S. Department of Agriculture with $350 million in additional funds to enable it to increase the level at which the government buys surplus dairy products off of the market. Buying surplus dairy products off of the market will reduce supply and increase prices.

This change in prices would bring approximately an additional $1.50 per hundredweight to struggling farmers.
