Klobuchar Statement Celebrating Independence Day

July 4, 2009

Minneapolis, MN – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement today to commemorate Independence Day:

“Today, Americans celebrate the birth of our nation.  We celebrate 233 years of independence.  And we celebrate the values in the founding of our country, engraved in the hearts of our people: liberty, justice, and equality.

“As our country faces enormous challenges at home and abroad, it’s worth remembering the example set by our Founding Fathers in 1776.  They didn’t shy from the great challenges before them, but they met them head on.  They stood up, together, for their values, their beliefs and for our country.  Their actions set in motion the most enduring experiment in democracy the world has ever seen.

“Today, let us stand together to meet the challenges of our time, and let’s honor the values that make our country great.  We’re going to have fun today.  There are parades all over the state of Minnesota. It’s a beautiful day in Northern Minnesota, where I am with my family.  But we must remember that as we celebrate our nation’s independence and enduring success, let us also remember all who have served and sacrificed for America’s freedom and security – our veterans, our soldiers, all the men and women currently serving in uniform who aren’t going to be with us today in Minnesota, but are with us in spirit all over the world.

“More than 100 years ago, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes described Independence Day as the time when ‘we pause to become conscious of our national life and to rejoice in it, to recall what our country has done for each of us and to ask ourselves what we can do for our country in return.’  His words still ring true today.

“On this Independence Day, let’s celebrate America’s successes, let’s take inspiration from those who sacrificed to make our country possible, and let’s give back to the country that has given us so much.

“I wish all the people of Minnesota a happy and memorable Fourth of July.”
