Senator Klobuchar Statement on Release of Roxana Saberi

May 11, 2009

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement today in response to the news that American journalist, Roxana Saberi has been granted a suspended two year sentence by an Iranian Appeals court and is now free to leave the country.

“I am glad this injustice has been reversed and Roxana Saberi is now free to return home.  Her arrest and imprisonment provoked a worldwide response.  The government of Iran should never have used this young American journalist as a pawn in their international game.”

Klobuchar recently spoke with the Swiss Ambassador to the U.S. and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations about the status of Saberi’s imprisonment and appeal.  In recent weeks, Senator Klobuchar has been in close coordination with the U.S. Department of State.

Klobuchar also sent a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations in March, urging him to intervene with the government of Iran to secure the immediate release of Saberi, who grew up in Fargo and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead.
