Klobuchar Announces Minnesota to Receive Over $1.5 Million in Senior Nutrition Funds from the Economic Recovery Act

Klobuchar says funding will provide critical assistance to seniors and create jobs

March 18, 2009

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar announced today that Minnesota will receive over $1.5 million in federal funding to help provide meals to seniors in need and restore jobs that have been eliminated in the nutrition services field.  Klobuchar, a member of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, said that meal programs are essential to helping senior citizens who have been hard hit by the economic downturn.

“Shrinking budgets and rising transportation costs are making it hard for seniors to get the nutritious meals they need,” said Klobuchar.  “These funds will help our senior citizens by preventing drastic budget cuts to essential programs and ensuring that seniors continue to get healthy meals on a consistent basis.”

The funding, a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was disbursed today by the Obama Administration and the Health and Human Services Department to the Minnesota Board on Aging.

Nationally, many senior nutrition programs are facing cutbacks or closure, while struggling with an increase in requests for assistance.  These funds will help increase the number of mass and home delivered meals to older adults.
