Klobuchar Continues Push to Crack Down on Energy Market Speculation and High Energy Costs

Takes to Senate floor to highlight how to provide consumers with short-term relief and bold long-term energy strategy

June 11, 2008

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar took to the Senate floor today to continue her push to bring consumers relief at the gas pump by cracking down on speculation in world energy markets, while also developing long-term renewable energy sources to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil.  Klobuchar emphasized the importance of taking action to help consumers who are being hit hard as gas tops $4 a gallon.

“People all across Minnesota are feeling the squeeze of unprecedented gas prices,’’ Klobuchar said. “If you drive past a Costco store in the Twin Cities suburbs where they are selling gas at discount prices – you will see gas lines that will remind you of the OPEC oil embargo of the 1970s.”

Yesterday Klobuchar supported the Consumer First Energy Act of 2008 which would have helped reduce energy prices, crack down on speculators, and help developed a long-term energy strategy.   Klobuchar has been working aggressively to help consumers deal with the rising price of gas and investigate speculation in the energy markets that have driven gas prices to all-time records.
