Klobuchar Announces $10 Million in Federal Funding for Central Corridor Project
Next crucial step for Twin Cities transit system
May 20, 2008
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has released nearly $10.2 million in federal funding for the Central Corridor Light Rail commuter line between St. Paul and Minneapolis. Klobuchar, who serves on the Senate Commerce Committee and Environment and Public Works Committee, was instrumental in securing DOT support for the transportation project. Klobuchar also secured $35 million in July for preliminary engineering activities for the 11-mile Central Corridor Light Rail line
“A growing metro area needs a forward-looking transportation policy – one that gives people choices, gets them out of rush-hour traffic and reduces congestion on our roads,’’ Klobuchar said. “The Central Corridor light-rail line is the next step in a 21st Century transit and transportation system for a 21st Century community.’’
Running from downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul, via the University of Minnesota and the Midway District, the Central Corridor will have 20 stops and is scheduled to open in 2014. It is expected to carry over 40,000 commuters each day by 2030.
