Klobuchar Statement on Northwest Airlines

Klobuchar, Member of the Senate Commerce Aviation Subcommittee, expresses concerns to Northwest CEO Doug Steenland about potential merger

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar issued the following statement about any potential merger after speaking with Northwest CEO Doug Steenland yesterday.  Klobuchar serves on the Senate Commerce Committee and its Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security which have jurisdiction over airline operations.  Klobuchar highlighted Northwest’s importance to Minnesota stating:

“I spoke with Doug Steenland yesterday to emphasize the need for the airline’s continued presence and investment in the economic growth of Minnesota and a connection to the global economy.  The jobs and economic development associated with the airline are a driving force behind Minnesota’s economy – ranging from its operations in Eagan to Chisholm to Rochester.

“Minnesota’s position as a hub for Northwest allows us to be a commercial center for small businesses and Fortune 500 companies alike, bringing thousands of visitors to our state each year. Any transaction relating to the airline industry must be examined carefully and thoroughly with an eye towards ensuring that the economic health of our state and its workers is not jeopardized.”

Early last year, Senator Klobuchar played an active role in the Senate Commerce Committee’s hearings regarding the possible merger of U.S. Airways and Delta.
