Sen. Klobuchar showcases Spam and other Minn. specialties (Austin Post-Bulletin)

Spam got some campaigning Thursday from a U.S. senator.

March 7, 2008

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar made Spam luncheon meat the featured treat at "Minnesota Morning," a weekly gathering for Minnesota constituents visiting Washington, according to a news release.

"You haven't lived until you've had Spam for breakfast," said Klobuchar, who sampled the Hormel Foods product last fall during a visit to Austin. "It's part of American history and part of the amazing Hormel story."

Klobuchar visited dozens of Minnesota communities during a "Main Street Tour" in January. After tasting favorite local foods at several stops, she decided to showcase the Minnesota specialties at the weekly Thursday morning coffee gatherings in her Washington office.

In coming months, she plans to serve Flavored Butter from Create-It-Yourself in Mahnomen and Honeycrisp apples from Emma's Orchard in Belle Plaine.

Her office will keep serving potica, a traditional pastry made on the Iron Range that Klobuchar's grandmother used to make.

Former 1st District Rep. Gil Gutknecht was featured in a short informational film at the Spam Museum. Gutknecht previously introduced Washington lawmakers to Spam at a breakfast meeting.
