It's time to 'stand tall' on Iraq, Klobuchar says (Star Tribune)

April 21, 2007

By BRADY AVERILL

WASHINGTON - More than a week after meeting with President Bush on Iraq, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., expected to return to the topic today in the Democratic response to the president's weekly radio address.

The United States needs to start withdrawing combat troops with the goal of having them out of Iraq by next spring, she says in her prepared address.

But she says some troops would need to stay behind to train Iraqi police, provide security for those still in Iraq and conduct special operations. "Our troops have been standing tall in Iraq. Now is the time for our leaders in Washington to stand tall," said Klobuchar, who traveled to Iraq last month. "We urge the president to work with Congress to pass a bill that - finally, after four years - begins a responsible change of course in Iraq and gives our brave soldiers the help they need when they come home."
