Calvin Harrison - U.S. Army, 3/11/1979 - 9/29/2010, Cleveland, TX. Green Berets are a special type of soldier. You have to be the best of the best: smart, tough, and an almost supernatural strength of will. Their qualification and training process is the toughest in the business: not just anyone can be a Green Beret. Everything is tested, from your language ability to physical fitness to your most basic but most difficult task: survival. They push you to your max and when you are just about to break, they push you harder. The training is so hard because they know what you are going to face: impossible, top-secret missions that must be done. But when you get through it all you have a physical and mental toughness that can survive even the most extreme conditions. You are not just a soldier- you are a true warrior. That’s what Sergeant First Class Calvin B. Harrison was- a true warrior. Harrison’s awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal (third award), National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, Army Service Ribbon, Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge and Parachutist Badge. Jesse Ainsworth - U.S. Army, 9/17/1985 - 7/10/2010, Dayton, TX. Staff Sergeant Jesse Ainsworth gave his life fighting terrorists on a battlefield in a far, faraway, desolate land near Kandahar in Afghanistan on July 10, 2010. He died from injuries caused by an IED. He was 24 years of age. He was an American warrior, and he was born in Texas and Jesse was an all American boy. He loved to hunt and fish in the woods near his home in Dayton, Texas. And after attending Dayton High School, he joined the United States Army. He was a team leader with the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division out of Ft. Drum. Jesse served two combat tours in Iraq before deploying to Afghanistan. He re-enlisted after his second tour of duty in Iraq and then that is why he went to Afghanistan. Jesse loved the Army, he loved his country, and he loved being a soldier. He was doing what he wanted to do. He was an Army man. Jesse is survived by his wife, Sarah; their 6-month old daughter, Lanna Rose; and his daughter, Lexie, who is three; Jesse's mother, Margeret; and stepfather, Wesley; and Jesse's two sisters, Rebecca and Shane. It has been said what we have done for ourselves dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. Staff Sergeant Jesse Ainsworth is that rare breed, that American breed that lived and died for something bigger than himself. We honor his life and his sacrifice. Staff Sergeant Edwardo Loredo died in Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Edwardo was killed by injuries sustained when an IED was detonated near his dismounted patrol. Sergeant Loredo was just 34 years of age, and it was just one day before his 35th birthday when he gave his life for our Nation. This great American warrior was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He was an Army Airborne soldier. Edwardo served combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan and was with C Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne out of Fort Bragg. Our Airborne soldiers plant the American flag and say, The American soldier is here to defend freedom and liberty. They go to liberate, not to conquer. And you can point them to danger, and they'll jump right in. They're the Airborne soldiers of the 82nd. They're called the "All Americans," signified by their famous "AA" patch on their shoulder. Staff Sergeant Edwardo Loredo was one of such American troopers. He graduated from Sam Houston High School and joined the Army shortly after graduation. He met his wife, Jennifer, in the Army. First Sergeant Jennifer Loredo, Edwardo's wife, was deployed to northern Afghanistan when she got news that her husband had been killed in southern Afghanistan. This fine young couple are examples of the absolute best America has. They sacrificed so much in service for the country that they love. Edwardo called his fellow soldiers his family as well, and he loved the Army life. We are grateful that a man like Edwardo Loredo lived and loved America. My heartfelt condolences to Edwardo's wife and children, his friends and family in Houston, and to the 82nd Airborne family. We honor this great American warrior's life and are humbled by his greatest of sacrifices. We are truly blessed to have called Staff Sergeant Edwardo Loredo an American. Specialist Matthew Catlett - U.S. Army, 10/6/1986-6/7/2010, Conroe, TX. U.S. Army Specialist Matthew Catlett was an infantryman with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky--one of the most prestigious and decorated divisions in the entire United States Army. He and his fellow soldiers were killed when their Humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device. That is called an IED. Matthew Catlett, this young American hero, was only 23 years of age when he gave his life for this country. There is nothing as noble as the character of a man who so willingly dedicates his life for others. The American warriors serving our military understand that better than anybody. They embody what is meant to be an American, and Matthew Catlett was such a man. He gave his life on June 7 on a battlefield in Afghanistan, fighting the terrorists who attacked America on September the 11th from that desolate, faraway land. Matthew grew up in Cypress, Texas. He joined the United States Army right out of Cyprus Ridge High School, always knowing he wanted to be a military man, a soldier in the United States Army. He served a tour of duty in Iraq 3 years ago and had just been redeployed to Afghanistan in April of this year.Matthew Catlett did his duty. He served this Nation as the fine soldier he always wanted to be. All of his fellow soldiers gave some, but Matthew Catlett gave all in defense of this Nation. He fought for liberty for a people he did not know in a land that he had never been. He was the American breed. He was a rare breed. So we honor our American warrior, and we honor the families left behind who grieve the loss of their loved one. Our grateful Nation will always remember that Specialist Matthew Catlett stood always ready to do his duty for us. Sgt. Brandon Bury - U.S. Marines, 10/29/1983-6/6/2010, Kingwood, TX. Marine Sergeant Brandon Bury was killed on Sunday, June 6 during combat operations in Kabul. This is a photograph of this marvelous marine. He leaves behind his wife, Heather, and his two young sons, Cole, who is 3-years-old, and Cade, who is 1. Brandon was on his third tour of duty. He previously served two deployments in Iraq, and he left for Afghanistan this April as part of a team training Afghan police. He was 26 years of age and a 2002 graduate of Kingwood High School in Texas. In his 26 short years, Brandon lived a lifetime of service to other people. He volunteered for the Marine Corps. He could have been an officer, but he wanted to be an enlisted man so he could be on the ground with other such marines. There is nothing like a U.S. marine. They go into the desert of the gun and the valley of the sun. They go where others fear to tread and the timid are not found. These young warriors make great sacrifices today in the heat and the dust and the deserts and the rough, rugged mountains of Afghanistan. They track down those terrorists wherever they try to hide. While we mourn the loss of Brandon Bury, we should thank God that a man like him ever lived. we shall always remember Brandon and his fellow marine brothers and the lives they gave for freedom. I extend my prayers and condolences to Brandon's wife and two young boys, and his parents, his relatives, and his friends in the Kingwood community. UNITED STATES MARINE SERGEANT BRANDON BURY - Marine Sergeant Brandon Bury was killed on Sunday, June 6 during combat operations in Kabul, Afghanistan. He leaves behind his wife, Heather, and his two young sons, Cole, who is 3-years-old, and Cade, who is 1. Brandon was on his third tour of duty. He was 26 years of age and a 2002 graduate of Kingwood High School in Texas. In his 26 short years, Brandon lived a lifetime of service to other people. Brandon's mom and dad, Terri and Bryan Bury, now live in Dallas, Texas, with his two brothers. I met Brandon 2 years ago at a 4th of July celebration in Kingwood. He stood 6 foot 6 and he was all Marine. He was an impressive individual, and his friends say even back in middle school Brandon knew what he wanted to do. He wanted to be a United States Marine. He volunteered for the Marine Corps. He could have been an officer, but he wanted to be an enlisted man so he could be on the ground with other such Marines. Brandon Bury was an American warrior. He was a hero in the tradition of our great men and women who defend the flag and liberty. While we mourn the loss of Brandon Bury, we should thank God that a man like him ever lived. Killed with Sergeant Bury were Lance Corporal Derek Hernandez, 20, of Edinburg, Texas, and Corporal Donald Marler, 22, from St. Louis, part of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton. These proud, young warriors were killed on the 66th anniversary of the D-day invasion of Europe. Mr. Speaker, we shall always remember Brandon and his fellow Marine brothers and the lives they gave for freedom. So today I extend my prayers and condolences to Brandon's wife and two young boys, and his parents, his relatives, and his friends in the Kingwood community. There is nothing quite like a Marine. Army SPC Jarrett Griemel died on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan. He was just 20 years old. SPC Griemel is the 28th warrior to have died in Iraq or Afghanistan with connection to the 2nd Congressional District of Texas. Jarrett was a young man who personified the best qualities of the young people of America today. Born in San Angelo, Texas and raised in La Porte, Texas, he joined the Army his junior year of high school. He had already completed basic training before graduating with honors from La Porte High School. Jarrett was a petroleum supply specialist assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division Battalion at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Jarrett’s experience in the outdoors growing up would come in handy in the rugged and cursed terrain. Jarrett was a proud and accomplished soldier and, at just 20 years old, he was only one day away from being promoted to sergeant when he died in Afghanistan. Texas is proud to have called him a son, a soldier and a hero. He will be remembered by his family, his friends and a grateful nation for his service. Jarrett’s wife, Candice, his mother, Trena Dorsett and her husband, Donnie of La Porte, Texas, and his father, Michael Griemel and his brothers, Chase, Jason and Brandon and sister, Brianna –are all a living testimony to the memory of this one brave soldier’s love of life, of country and of his fellow man. It’s been said “without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines and their families this nation would not stand so boldly – shine so brightly –or live so freely.” SPC Jarrett Griemel was one of those soldiers – an American soldier – the rare breed who take care of the rest of us. Colonel Mark E. Stratton - U.S. Air Force 7/1/1969-5/26/2009, Houston, TX. Col. Stratton gave his life helping the Afghan people to a life lived in freedom. He was assigned to the Joint Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and served as the commander of the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan. On May 26, 2009, Mark died near Bagram Airfield of wounds that he sustained from an improvised explosive device. Mark had strong Texas ties. He graduated from Texas A&M; in December of 1991. He has numerous Air Force commendations, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He is remembered by friends as a man of unquestionable character and loyalty. He was a patriotic individual who exemplified the spirit of the American airman. Through his heroic work in Afghanistan, Mark lived a life helping other people. His time was spent building roads and clinics, schools and canals for the Afghan people. He was an ambassador for the American spirit. When he was killed the villagers in Afghanistan had a memorial service in his honor. Just a few weeks prior to his death, Mark made a special effort to share his Texas Aggie spirit with the Afghan friends that he had met. On April 21st, Aggies observe what is called Aggie Muster where all Aggies gather around the world to honor Aggies who have died the previous year. Even though Mark was the only Aggie within 100 miles of his forward operating base, he convinced the Panjshir Provincial Governor to join him atop a nearby mountain to observe this very special occasion. One Aggie Air Force colonel and Afghan villagers paid tribute to Americans who died the previous year. Mark was a proud Texas Aggie. There is no doubt the people of Afghanistan will remember the man from America, the Air Force colonel who built their schools, their water wells, and their villages. And maybe those villagers will return once more to that mountaintop and pay tribute to this American hero, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Stratton. Tousha - U.S. Army 2/11/78-4/9/08 Hull, TX Hull-Daisetta High School Army Sergeant Shaun Paul Tousha was killed in Baghdad, Iraq on April 9, 2008 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. In my Congressional district area, Shaun Paul is the 26th area resident that has been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan during these wars. He died as a war hero at the age of 30, and he will forever be recognized as how he lived, that being a loving husband, a caring father and a great friend to all those people in rural America. Shaun Paul Tousha was born February 11, 1978 in Silsbee, Texas. He grew up in the town of Hull, Texas, and he was the son of the late Tommy Gene and Roberta Tousha. He was a husband to Christy Tousha, and loving father of the two children, Colton and Maycee. Shaun joined the United States Army at the age of 22 in February of 2000, attended basic training in Ft. Benning, Georgia, and later was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. He was assigned as a Generator Equipment Repairman in the 1st Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Ft. Hood, Texas. General Patton reminded us that "wars may be fought with weapons but they are won by men." Shaun was a skillful soldier, and he and his comrades in arms are the ones with the boots on the ground that are winning this war. Shaun realized this, and during his first tour of duty in Iraq he decided to re-enlist in the United States Army and make the military his career. He served three tours of duty in Iraq. He had a heart as big as Texas, and we are proud of Sergeant Shaun Tousha. The light of his life has been extinguished, buy Shaun's joyful spirit will burn bright forever in the hearts and minds of his friends, his fellow soldiers, and the Texans that loved him. McIntosh - U.S. Army 02/04/82-03/10/08 Humble, TX Cypress Creek High School United States Army Corporal Scott A. McIntosh, of Humble, Texas, was killed in Iraq on March 10, 2008 by a suicide bomber, and he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Not only was he a loyal and courageous soldier, but he was a beloved son, a caring brother and a friend to many. His life was special not just because of how he died, but also because of how he lived. He was born on February 4, 1982 in Humble, Texas, and he graduated from Cypress High School in 2001. After trying college for a little while he decided it wasn't ready for him, and he joined the United States Army. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, in Fort Stewart, Georgia. He re-enlisted for three more years when his first tour of duty was over. His parents, Alex and Gwenn McIntosh, did an excellent job raising such a fine son. Scott always had a positive outlook on life. He loved his family, the Army, the country he lived in and his life. Scott was always looking out for other people, and that's why he joined the United States Army. He wanted to protect and serve those he loved. Scott's wonderful life is a huge loss to those that were close to him. We do not forget, as a Nation, Corporal Scott A. McIntosh and all those who sacrificed their lives on the altar of freedom. Scott's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of friends and family, while his life will always be an inspiration to Americans. Specialist Donald E. Valentine III of the United States Army was born in Houston, Texas, on March 5, 1986. Donald Valentine joined the United States Army because of the 9/11 attack on this country. Specialist Valentine was killed along with two other soldiers on September 18, 2007, in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, when an IED, an improvised explosive device, detonated near him. Specialist Donald Valentine III comes from a military family. His father, Donald II, is a Navy veteran. His brother Daniel wanted to enlist to be with his brother Donald in Iraq, and Daniel, 19, still intends to join the military. Specialist Valentine is the 91st fallen service member with ties to the Houston area to have been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team from Fort Lewis, Washington. Specialist Valentine lived a short but faithful life to the things that were important to him: family and country. He was 21 when he was killed. General George Patton was right about such warriors. We should thank God that such men as Specialist Donald Valentine III ever lived. Staff Sgt Eric Duckworth - U.S. Army 10/30/80-10/10/07 Plano, TX Clear Lake High School Army Staff Sergeant Eric Duckworth was killed in the line of duty in Iraq on October 10, when he was leading a convoy and his vehicle was hit by an IED, an improvised explosive device, on the side of the road. Sergeant Duckworth was 26 years of age and on his second tour in Iraq. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas, in 1999, and while in high school, he wanted to participate in the military, so he joined the ROTC. As soon as he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Army. His parents, Michael and Barbara Duckworth, of The Woodlands, Texas, say that for as long as they can remember, their son Eric wanted to serve his country in public service both in law enforcement and in the military. Sergeant Duckworth was also a husband and a father. He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Sonya, and they have three children. Eric said that the Iraqi people were grateful to Americans for their sacrifice in Iraq. Sergeant Duckworth also said it was his destiny and his belief that he should be an American soldier. He shared that belief with his mother in their last conversation they had together before he was killed in Iraq. The whole Duckworth family felt it was important that Staff Sergeant Eric Duckworth serve in the United States Army overseas. Sergeant Duckworth's service to his family and the Army and this country will always be remembered. Of course he is one of those few proud American heroes. Staff Sergeant Duckworth, America appreciates your sacrifice on the alter of freedom for the rest of us, and we also appreciate the sacrifice of the entire Duckworth family down in Houston, Texas. We are sympathetic and grieve with this family, but are proud of their son who served in the United States Army. Lance Corporal Jeremy Burris - U.S. Marine Corps 12/3/84-10/8/07 Liberty, TX Lance Corporal Jeremy Burris of the United States Marine Corps was killed on October 8, 2007, while conducting combat operations in al-Anbar Province in Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Pendleton, California. He was driving a military vehicle and was accompanied by two other Marines when the vehicle hit an IED, that's an improvised explosive device, hidden in the road. Lance Corporal Burris survived the initial blast and helped the other two wounded Marines from the vehicle. Then Jeremy returned to the vehicle to retrieve sensitive equipment when a second bomb detonated and Lance Corporal Burris was killed. It's not uncommon that our enemy sets a second delayed bomb explosion because they know Marines will always return for their wounded or dead or sensitive equipment from their damaged vehicles. This is how these cowards of the desert conduct war against our troops. They do so remotely. They won't come out in the open and fight because they fear the Marines and the Marine reputation. Burris was a proud Marine. He was an unapologetic person of faith, and he attended the nondenominational church, Cornerstone Church, where he led worship and praise sessions for youth groups. Lance Corporal Burris believed totally in his mission in Iraq. He said he was not afraid to die, and he joined the Marines a year and a half ago knowing he would go off to war. He told his youth minister “he would rather die young while he was able to give 100 percent than grow old and not be able to give that 100 percent.” Amazing man - this young gun of the United States Marine Corps. Ronald Reagan said this about the United States Marines: “Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines, they don't have that problem.” Jeremy Burris was one of those Marines. Army Specialist Kamisha Block was killed in Baghdad August 16, 2007, in the hot war for Iraq. Kamisha Block became the first female from southeast Texas to die in this war. She enlisted in 2005 at the age of 18 in the United States Army. Kamisha volunteered for the Army when this country was at war, and she probably expected to be sent to the desert of the gun and the valley of the sun. She joined the Army right out of high school. Specialist Block was a military police officer, and eventually wanted to be in law enforcement with a career in the FBI or the CIA. She was assigned to the 401st Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion and 89th Military Police Brigade out of Fort Hood, Texas. Specialist Block's death hit her family hard, and the whole community mourns for her. While serving in Korea and Iraq, Specialist Kamisha Block was awarded several commendations. She was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, Operation Iraqi Freedom Service Ribbon, and the Bronze Star. Specialist Block showed in a mere 20 years the example of compassion, duty, determination, love of country, and love of God that will echo in her small town of Texas throughout eternity. Dunn - U.S. Army 01/18/69-02/02/07 Pascagoula, MS Pascagoula High School Calling Atascocita, Texas, home, Staff Sergeant Dunn graduated from Pascagoula High School in Mississippi in 1987. In 1991, Staff Sergeant Dunn enlisted in the United States Army. He volunteered to serve this country and to become a part of an organization that accomplished great things. For him, the Army was his life. For 16 years, Staff Sergeant Dunn devoted his life to protecting United States and its citizens from those who wanted to destroy us, freedom and liberty. He was always taking time to make sure that his Army uniform was in perfect shape, and he was proud of his service. He was assigned to the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He was a mechanic for the United States Army and responsible for servicing vehicles and Army tanks. On February 2 of this year, Staff Sergeant Dunn called home to one of his sisters, checking on the status of the folks back home. His sister had no way of knowing that that would be the last time that she spoke to her brother. Sergeant Dunn is the 18th American warrior associated with my southeast congressional district to be killed in this war in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. For his bravery and service to his people, Staff Sergeant Dunn was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was brought home to Louisiana, his birthplace. Staff Sergeant Dunn was carried by his fellow soldiers in the Army Honor Guard, and he was laid to rest with full military honors. Staff Sergeant Dunn was an American patriot. That is a word sometimes we don't like to use, but he was, and he was proud to be a patriot. He was a hero to his family, his fellow soldiers, and to us. He served his country for 16 years, and he accomplished great things in the United States Army. So God bless the Dunn family and God bless Staff Sergeant Dunn. He fought for our Nation. He defended liberty in lands far, far away. And he never surrendered. PFC Zachary Endsley - U.S. Army 07/03/86-07/23/07 Spring,TX Oak Ridge High School Army Private First Class Zachary Endsley was an individual who understood that being a military soldier was his calling. A native of Spring, Texas, PFC Endsley had been hearing the calling to become an American warrior for many years in his young life. He joined the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer organization with the United States Air Force when he was just a teenager. He was also involved in the Air Force Junior ROTC at Oak Ridge High School. After graduating from high school in 2004, he attended local community college but realized that college wasn't really for him. After putting off the calling to be a soldier for long enough, he knew it was time to pursue a career in the United States Army. His family was proud of his decision to serve, and he enlisted in the Army in 2005. Endsley excelled in his military placement test for the Army and had the distinct honor of being able to choose the job he wanted to hold. PFC Endsley understood the Nation was at war, yet he chose to charge headlong into battle. On Monday, July 23, 2007, PFC Zachary Endsley's unit came under fire by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. In the midst of this battle, his vehicle was assaulted with rocket-propelled grenade fire. PFC Endsley was killed in action. He was 21 years of age. PFC Zachary Endsley was a true soldier. As an infantryman in Afghanistan fighting the forces of the Taliban, Endsley defended freedom. He defended it for his mother, Melinda; his stepfather, David; his father, Terry; his brother, Aaron; his stepsisters, Katie and Kimberly; and all of their families. Those who he protected will line the streets, as the small towns in southeast Texas always do when their fallen come home. And they will bid a silent and proud farewell to a soldier they might not have had the privilege to know, but they will always be grateful to. PFC Brandon Bobb - U.S. Army 1/15/87-07/17/07, Memorial High School, Port Arthur, Riverview High School, Sarasota, FL. Army PFC Brandon Keith Bobb believed in freedom and liberation from tyranny and terrorism. He was born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas. He attended Memorial High School, however, did not get the opportunity to graduate from there because of Hurricane Rita. The Hurricane reared her vicious head and forced Bobb and his family to evacuate southeast Texas, and relocate to Florida. He did not always want to be in the United States Army. It was in Riverview that he decided that he wanted to belong in the United States Army. He knew the United States was at war in action and Iraq, but he enlisted in the Army because he knew it was his duty. As private first class in the Army, Bobb became a military police officer in the 401st Military Police Company, 92nd Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. He was a man of many friends, especially among his brothers in arms in the United States Army. He was always thinking of others, according to his friends. Private First Class Bobb was deployed to Iraq in 2006 and was proud to go over to the vast desert sands of Iraq and defend freedom for the Iraqi people and represent the United States. He believed in his heart what he was doing was right. But on July 17 Private First Class Bobb was traveling in a military Humvee in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad when a bomb detonated near the vehicle. The bomb killed Pfc. Brandon Bobb and two of his fellow soldiers. He was 20 years old. He was due home from duty on July 26. That would have been one week after he gave his life for his country. Pfc. Brandon Bobb embodied what it meant to serve one's country with duty and honor, to put others above himself, and to defend the freedom of all Nations. We are a grateful Nation for the sacrifice of Pfc. Brandon Bobb. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and his Army buddies. At a young age, he knew he wanted to be a Marine. He felt so compelled to serve our country that he took every opportunity to become involved in any military program that he could find. When he was in the Junior ROTC, Anthony was the company commander. During his senior year in high school, he achieved the rank of cadet captain. He always had a sense of duty to this country. According to the ROTC instructor, Anthony wanted to be a Marine because he thought it was the toughest of military U.S. services. Lance Corporal Aguirre joined the United States Marine Corps 1 year after graduating from Channelview High School and became a member of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force in Hawaii. On February 26, 2007, at the age of 20, in an act of fearless courage, LCpl Aguirre put his life on the line for his brothers in arms. And while fighting the forces of evil in Al Anbar Province in Iraq, Anthony stepped on an improvised explosive device. But he didn't immediately jump, as would be a reflection or a reaction for most of us. He kept his foot on the IED and he told the other 20 Marines standing around him to clear the area and take cover. When he saw that they were out of harm's way, he took his foot off the device. He gave his life so that other Marines could live. When this group of Marines reported back to their commander, they told him that Tony had just saved their lives. The commander immediately knew they were referring to LCpl Anthony Aguirre.Anthony Aguirre was buried today in Highlands, Texas. The high school flag was flown at half mast in his honor. Lance Corporal Aguirre died as he lived, for the Marines, for his brothers in arms. David Michael Fraser - U.S. Army 10/23/81-11/26/06 Houston, TX Captain David Fraser patrolled the vast desert battlefields of war-torn Iraq in search of the enemies of freedom. On November 26, 2006, 25-year-old Captain Fraser and three other soldiers were killed in Baghdad by a cowardly enemy using an improvised explosive device called an IED. Captain Fraser was a native of Spring, Texas. He attended Westfield High School where he was an honor student and a star cross-country athlete. Those who knew Captain Fraser knew a man who was respected and admired by all. Captain Fraser applied to the West Point Military Academy, he said, out of sense of duty and as his way of giving back to a country that provided him with unlimited opportunities. At West Point, Captain Fraser was a superior student in the classroom. He graduated with honors as the top student in civil engineering. An accomplished soldier, Captain Fraser completed the rigorous Army Ranger, Airborne, and Air Assault schools. In December 2005, Captain Fraser was deployed to Iraq, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, and commanded several units. It was his mission to protect our soldiers and innocent Iraqis from those who stand against freedom and liberty. As a decorated serviceman, Captain Fraser was the recipient of the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal for his service while in Iraq during a time of war. He was also awarded the Army Service Ribbon. For his valor during combat on November 26, Captain Fraser was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. The Fraser family and the Spring, Texas, community will always remember that their son died a hero, serving this great country of ours and defending the basic rights of life and liberty and freedom. God bless the Fraser family and God bless David Fraser and God bless all those who wear the uniform of the American warrior. Lance Cpl. Ryan A. Miller - United States Marine Corps 10/09/86-09/14/06 Pearland, TX Ryan Adam Miller from Pearland, Texas, and 19 years of age, was a third generation marine. His grandfather was a marine in the great World War II. His father Frank was a marine in Vietnam. Ryan was so committed to a future defending others, he graduated from high school early just so he could enlist into the United States Marine Corps. While Ryan loved the Corps, his dream didn't end with service to his country. He has another wish, another sacrifice he wanted to make. He wanted to finish his military career in the Marine Corps and join another force, the very same police force both his mother and father gave decades of their lives to. Both Ryan's parents served for years in the Houston Police Department. I know both of them because of my experience as a prosecutor and as a judge. At the last Houston Police Department cadet graduation this summer, I spoke to Ryan's mother Jeannie, who told me her son was coming back to Houston after he finished his tour of duty in Iraq to be a Houston police officer. This dream was almost a reality. Sadly, he was just days away from returning home when, on September 14, this young marine was killed on patrol by an IED during combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Ryan Miller was a fine marine. He was a fine human being. His death was not a loss, because he gave his life over there for all of us over here. We honor Ryan, we honor the parents of this marine and their sacrifices. I also pause today to remember the marines who served with Ryan, and all those who volunteered to defend and protect this great country. They are the fabric of this great Nation. While the blood of their fellow comrades is the red color in the stripes of Old Glory, these few, these proud, these marines, keep us free to see the stars, stars of liberty, freedom and justice. God bless these sons of America. Sgt. Walter M Moss, Jr. - U.S. Air Force 01/08/69-03/30/06 Native Houstonian, Walter Moss, Jr., voluntarily served our Nation in Iraq and died doing so. On March 29, 2006, Tech Sergeant Moss became the 200th Texas member of the Armed Forces killed in Iraq. Moss was the first airman from Sather Air Force Base in Iraq to be killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was 37 years old. In his long military career, he specialized in the dangerous job of detection and removal of explosive devices. He was killed while trying to defuse a makeshift bomb while conducting operations near Baghdad. Born in Houston, Texas, Moss attended Aldine High School. He joined the Air Force upon graduation. During his 16-year military career, he guarded the likes of former President George H. Bush and the First Lady. In 1997, he and his family were stationed at the 31st CE Squadron, Aviano Air Force Base, Italy. He was handpicked from his unit to provide EOD support during the Middle East peace talks where he ensured then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's safety. Technical Sergeant Moss was deployed in support of Operations Southern Watch, Allied Force, Desert Strike, Northern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster. Even though he was in the Air Force, the Navy and Marines honored him with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and he will be awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. He died as he lived: Protecting Americans. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the brave airmen such as Technical Sergeant Walter Moss. He sought out danger so others would not face danger. His unyielding courage was an inspiration to his fellow airmen and his family. He was an American patriot, and he was a cut above the rest of us. Houston, TX Staff Sgt. Benjamin D. Williams - U.S. Marine Corps 03/15/76-06/20/06 Orange, TX Staff Sergeant Benjamin DeWayne Williams, United States Marine, was a true patriot. He was from Orange, Texas, and on his third and last deployment. He was set to return home on August 15. He had plans to surprise his mother. But before that could happen, he was killed on June 20 fighting the enemy forces in Al Anbar, Iraq. Ben Williams was 30 years of age. His friends said he loved being a Marine. He went to Little Cypress Mauriceville High School and played football, and as soon as he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He was a staff sergeant in the Marines and an infantry unit leader assigned to the First Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division of the First Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, California. His sacrifice gives true meaning to the Vietnam era phrase ``All gave some…Some gave all.'' Sergeant Williams gave all, dying for the rest of us. It was his devotion that thrust him into battle with his eyes wide open. He knew that there was a chance he wouldn't come home. His level of devotion meant giving himself after giving his all. His life is the cost of freedom, a freedom and an expense that he embraced proudly. Every member of the military we remember is described as someone who loved his country, a soldier to the bone who believed in what they were doing. We call ourselves patriots, but few of us have the scars to prove it. Few have the courage to face and embrace the darkest unknown, the possibility of not going home. These few, these volunteers, are a rich testament to the courage they have in their hearts. Now and always we must remember their sacrifice, our men and women who fight, so we can look in the blue skies of liberty and remember them with the flying of every star and every stripe. Staff Sgt. Edward Reynolds, Jr. - U.S. Army 12/30/78-09/26/06 Groves, TX U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Edward Charles Reynolds, Jr. was an 8-year Army veteran. He is a native of Port Arthur, Texas, and he was a 1997 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. Family was the most important thing to Staff Sergeant Reynolds. Friends knew him as the man that kept them out of trouble, pushing them to succeed in life. And his country knew him as a defender of our freedoms. In December 2005, Staff Sergeant Reynolds was deployed to Iraq, worlds away. During the next 10 months, assigned to the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Staff Sergeant Reynolds dodged bullets, IEDs, and Iraqi outlaws throughout the Baghdad desert. But on September 26, Staff Sergeant Reynolds and a fellow soldier were crossing a Baghdad bridge in a military convoy when that bridge collapsed, plunging their vehicle underwater, trapping both soldiers inside. 27-year-old Staff Sergeant Reynolds and his colleague were killed in action, becoming victims in the struggle for Iraqi freedom. A decorated soldier, Staff Sergeant Reynolds was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, the Kosovo Campaign Medal. He was also awarded the Iraqi Combat Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. He was a lifelong member of the Borden Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. And like his mother and father, Staff Sergeant Reynolds had a devout faith in his Almighty God, believing that everything he was given was a gift by Him. American citizens are born into the privilege of freedom, and we must remember that the sacrifice given by Staff Sergeant Reynolds and all American warriors is responsible for the continuation of this great Nation. Staff Sergeant Reynolds chose to protect the freedom that he was born into from the violent militants robbing nations of life and liberty. So God bless Staff Sergeant Reynolds and his family. Staff Sgt. Jerry Michael Durbin - U.S. Army 07/06/79-01/25/06 Spring, TX Army Staff Sergeant Michael Durbin was born on July 6, 1979, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in Spring, Texas, and attended Nimitz High School. He attended Kingwood College before deciding to enlist in the Army in 2001 at the age of 21. His goal in life was to someday work for the CIA, and he enlisted in the hopes that the military would be a quick route toward that goal. By the age of 26, Michael had already become staff sergeant in an air assault unit, and had bold aspirations of becoming a member of the elite and daring Delta Force. Staff Sergeant Durbin had already served two tours of duty in the Middle East and was deployed for his third tour of duty in September 2005. He became the 194th Texan killed since the start of the war. He was killed when a homemade bomb exploded while he was on patrol. Michael was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. With his entire life before him, and his aspirations to serve Americans, Michael risked everything to fight for the values and freedoms we as Americans enjoy this day and every day. He was fighting so the Iraqis can enjoy these freedoms as well. With the death of Michael Durbin, this Nation lost a freedom fighter, a loving father, and, as his dad said, a perfect son. Specialist Ryan R. Berg - U.S. Army 07/24/87-01/09/07 Sabine Pass, TX Sabine Pass High School Army Specialist Ryan Berg was an American soldier. When others his age were talking about going to college or working in the nearby refineries, Ryan went to the local Army recruiter's office on his 18th birthday and joined the United States Army, knowing America was at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He wanted to make a difference by being an American soldier. Ryan Berg had spent his entire life in Sabine Pass, Texas, and he knew everybody in town. Ryan knew his calling after high school was to join the United States Army. He simply wanted to protect his country, like he had protected those he knew and loved all his life. He was deployed to Iraq on October 4, 2006, and he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Brigade, Alpha Section, 3rd Platoon. Amazing people, these Americans who go to war. On January 4, 2007 with nearly a year to go in Iraq, the teenager returned to the battlefront to fight against these insurgents and their terror against the people of Iraq. Ryan was only in Iraq for 5 days when he was shot by a hidden enemy sniper. The wound was fatal. 19-year-old U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Berg became the first son of Sabine Pass, Texas, to be killed defending freedom in that land far, far away, of Iraq. For his courage during combat, Ryan was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Ryan's loved ones expressed their pride of his service to America and the bravery their soldier exhibited throughout his career. This Nation owes its gratitude, its liberties, its freedom, to people like Specialist Ryan Berg and to brave soldiers who have walked the path of sacrifice for the rest of us. So God bless Sabine Pass, Texas and God bless the Berg family and God Bless Ryan Berg. Specialist Dustin R. Donica - U.S. Army 07/11/84-12/28/06 Spring, TX Klein High School Army Specialist Dustin Ross Donica served in the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division of Fort Richardson, Alaska. Dustin grew up in Spring, Texas, outside of Houston. In 2003, the Klein High School graduate left the University of Texas and enlisted in the United States Army. When Dustin was asked about joining the Army, he said, ``I've grown up in a very privileged area. When most people of my generation are asked to do something, their first thought is, how will this benefit me? I need to do this so that my first thought is, how does it benefit others.'' No wonder people said Dustin had a sense of honor and duty. Traits that are very rare in our culture. Dustin was constantly concerned for the well-being of his family back home. But on December 28, 2006, at the dynamic age of 22, Dustin Donica was killed in Iraq, conducting combat operations against the anti-Iraqi forces in the city of Karmah in the Al Anbar Province. As in many other times in his life, Dustin was standing guard, protecting his fellow soldiers in arms when he received his fatal injuries. Dustin Donica's name was the example of bravery, courage and duty. Dustin, like those who came before him, stopped at nothing to defend freedom. Our American duty, the duty for all of us that are left behind, is to honor America's sons, like Dustin Donica. Dustin was laid to rest with full military honors in Klein Memorial Park Cemetery in Texas. These young Americans like Dustin are a rare breed. They are the American breed, and we thank them and their families. Lance Cpl. Robert A. Martinez - U.S. Marine Corps 03/11/85-12/01/05 Cleveland, TX Lance Corporal Robert ``Robbie'' Alexander Martinez was killed December 1 while fighting and serving our Nation in Iraq. He was a member of the Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Air Ground and Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, California. Lance Corporal Martinez was just 20 years of age. He was on his second Iraqi tour. He had already spent 7 months on the Syrian border in 2004. He went to Iraq and into Fallujah this past June. He and nine other Marines were killed when a roadside bomb exploded next to them in the deadliest attack against American troops in Iraq in 4 months. Martinez was scheduled to come home this past Monday but at the last minute his tour was extended for a month and a half. Robbie Martinez graduated from Cleveland High School in Cleveland, Texas, in 2003. By the time he started his senior year, he had already signed up for the Marines. He pre-enlisted at the age of 17 so he could be activated as soon as he graduated from high school. He put his dreams on hold to join the elite fighting forces of the United States Marine Corps. He left for basic training 2 days after he graduated from high school. He is remembered for his infectious smile and someone who loved spending time with his family and friends. Lance Corporal Martinez was working to make a difference in the world when he gave his life. His bravery, his dedication, his patriotism will not be forgotten by his friends, his family and freedom-loving peoples throughout the world. Lance Corporal Martinez died for this country, the Iraqi people and for that word freedom. His Nation made the call and he responded without hesitation with his unwavering courage and his commitment. He served his country with honor and distinction. He is a heroic representative of the State of Texas and an honorable defender of liberty and freedom. Sgt. William B. Meeuwsen; 2/10/81 – 11/23/05 - Sergeant Bill Meeuwsen was truly a remarkable person. Bill was born in Mount Vernon, Washington, on February 10, 1981, and when he was 10 years old, he and his family found their way to southeast Texas and moved to Kingwood, Texas. He attended Kingwood High School and he graduated in 1999. He went on to Texas A&M; University, and he and some of his friends enlisted in the United States Army as a result of the attacks of September 11, 2001. It was that sense of patriotism that led him to enter the United States Army. Bill was initially deployed with the renowned Band of Brothers to Camp Giant, near the Korean demilitarized zone in March of 2003. A year later, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Bill was then deployed to Iraq just 3 months later, in October of 2005. Two months after that, on the day before Thanksgiving this year, Sergeant Bill Meeuwsen was one of two soldiers killed in action when his unit came under direct fire near Baghdad. He was the 186th Texan killed in Iraq since the war began. Bill is remembered as a person who loved his friends and family. He was a freedom fighter, he was an Aggie, a son of proud parents, a member of the band of brothers, an American warrior, and an inspiration to all patriots. His patriotism and heroism and his life will not be forgotten. He paid for freedom with his life. He paid for our safety with his blood, and he paid for our future years with his youth. PFC Wesley R. Riggs - U.S. Army 08/16/85-05/17/05 Beach City, TX Private First Class Wesley Robert Riggs died serving our Nation in Iraq. Private First Class Riggs, in only 19 years, had exhibited a lifetime of dedication and duty. He was killed during a patrol on May 17, 2005, near Tikrit, Iraq, when a roadside bomb exploded. He was a native of Baytown/Beach City, Texas. Wesley graduated in 3 years from Barbers Hill High School in 2003. Before enlisting in the United States Army in 2004, Wesley spent his days like many other young Texans. Our military cannot replace individuals of such exceptional character as Private First Class Riggs. However, his service will provide a stirring example for the men and women who carry forward his tenacious fight against tyranny, terror and treachery. Moreover, Private First Class Riggs helped to establish a democracy, the historic start of which I was privileged to witness in Iraq this past January. Freedom does not come, Mr. Speaker, because somebody carries a sign in protest. It comes because of sacrifice. Private First Class Riggs, we will not forget you, an Army of one. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. We thank you, Private First Class Riggs, for your service, your dedication and sacrifice to your country. Lance Cpl. Wesley J. Canning - U.S. Marine Corps 04/01/83-11/10/04 Friendswood, TX Springbrook Marine Lance Corporal Wesley Joel Canning, died valiantly serving our country and our Nation in Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In just 21 short years, he had already exhibited a lifetime of courage and boldness. He was killed in combat on November 10, 2004, in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, during the successful American offensive against the insurgent enemy in Fallujah. He was a native of Friendswood, Texas. Wes graduated from Friendswood High School in 2002 and left for boot camp in July, just 2 months after his graduation. Resolute about becoming a Marine since his junior year, he had approached his parents with the idea. The devastating terrorist attack on September 11, which occurred before he ever graduated from high school, further fueled this desire. He graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He steadfastly pursued a post that would allow him to see action. Open for deployment in Iraq, he stayed at Camp Pendleton in California rather than accept another assignment. In mid-March of 2003, with the commencement of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Lance Corporal Canning's wish came true. He then returned to Texas after completing his first of ultimately two tours he volunteered for in Iraq. Two months after being deployed to Iraq for a second tour he was killed in action precisely on the 229th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. We extend our prayers, our condolences to his parents, relatives, fellow students at Friendswood High School in Texas, and his beloved wife. May this American hero's devotion to his country continue to kindle our dreams and ambitions as a free and independent people. Lance Cpl. Luke Yepsen - U.S. Marine Corps 04/01/86-12/14/06 Kingwood, TX Kingwood High School Luke Yepsen was one man whose life was making a difference at a very young age. He personified the core values of the United States Marine Corps of honor, courage, commitment. He was from Kingwood, Texas, a close-knit community near Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of Kingwood High School, and he was known for his big heart and ability to live life to its fullest extent. Luke deeply cared about his family back home in Texas and his military family. His fellow Marines said he was more than just a friend; he was a brother, a brother to everyone who knew him. Like many Texans, especially those Texans who go to war, Luke chose to enroll in Texas A&M; after high school. During his freshman year, he made a decision to leave Texas A&M; University. With faith in God and country, at 18 Luke enrolled in the United States Marine Corps. He was an assaultman, later a mechanic, which came easy to him because of his love of cars. In October of 2006, Luke was deployed to Iraq with the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. On December 14, 2006, at the age of 20, Luke, while fighting the forces of evil, was killed by enemy action in Iraq. For his military service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. On the morning of December 22, 2006, hundreds of Kingwood, Texas, residents lined the streets of this community paying tribute to the family of this patriot. Patriotism is alive and well in the United States. And as the Kingwood, Texas, community mourns the loss of America's son, Luke Yepsen, and all those who came before him and all those that will come after him, we know that freedom is not free, we thank this fearless Marine for dedicating his life to America. PFC Kristian Menchaca - U.S. Army 05/29/83-06/16/06 Houston, TX Lance Cpl. Fred Lee Maciel; 11/7/84 – 1/26/05 - Lance Corporal Fred Lee Maciel was a young American marine from my Southeast Texas district, who died valiantly serving our Nation in Iraq. He was assigned to the Third Marine Division. Lance Corporal Maciel in his 20 years had already exhibited a lifetime of sacrifice and selflessness. In the deadliest event for American forces in Iraq since the start of the operations in March of 2003, he and 30 other servicemen were killed in combat when the helicopter in which they were traveling crashed in Al Anbar Province in Iraq. Lance Corporal Maciel and all his brethren aboard this helicopter, including 6 other U.S. marines from Texas, were on their way to begin security preparations for the ultimately successful and historic Iraqi elections that I personally had the honor to witness several days later. Lance Corporal Maciel died so that freedom could live in the birth of this new democracy that we call Iraq. This Lance Corporal was a native of Spring, Texas. He graduated from Spring High School in 2003 and joined the United States Marine Corps that September. He is remembered as an athlete, a leader in the school's Naval Junior ROTC, and a role model for other students. Last week when I spoke to Fred's mother, Mrs. Patsy Maciel, she told me that her son went to Iraq to protect Texans and Americans from terrorists. Under extremely grueling circumstances, Lance Corporal Maciel contributed to that very cause. He inspired his follow marines with his courage, commitment, his character. Lance Corporal Maciel died in helping establish democracy in a land far, far away. Lance Corporal Maciel we will remember, we will forever remember your fight against these international outlaws. As we extend our prayers and our condolences to his parents, his relatives, his fellow students at Spring High School in Texas and his fiance, may this American hero's devotion to his country continue to kindle our dreams and ambitions of a free people.
