Border Security/Illegal Immigration
I do not support illegal immigration or amnesty for illegal immigrants already in this country.  Period. I support immigration, but people must do it legally. Amnesty rewards illegal conduct and only increases the number of illegal immigrants who try to enter America as we have seen in the previous amnesties in 1986 and 1996. As a former judge for over 22 years, I believe very strongly in the respect for the rule of law. I never let anyone get away with breaking the law and immigration laws should be no different. We must vigorously enforce the laws we already have on the books and make some of them stronger.  As a new Member of the Judiciary Committee and Immigration Subcommittee in the 111th Congress, I will be deeply involved in these issues and will work tirelessly to secure our border and enforce the rule of law.

 Energy
I am committed to reducing the United States’ dependency on foreign sources of oil. We cannot rely on unstable regions in the world to supply our energy. Exploring domestic sources of energy will reduce our reliance and drive down our oil and gasoline prices at home. The United States should explore all alternatives to eliminate our foreign energy dependence. This includes developing wind, solar, nuclear, and other practical energy alternatives.

 Foreign Affairs
As a Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I strongly believe America has a role to help spread democracy, the rule of law, and to help open societies across the globe. I am committed to protecting American interests abroad and believe the best way to do that is through a foreign policy that respects the sovereignty of foreign nations, while at the same time demands adherence to universal principles of liberty and justice.

Health Care
The goals of health care reform should be simple. Increase access and choice, ensure and maintain quality, eliminate fraud and waste, and take advantage of every technological tool available to make the system more efficient and effective. I firmly believe that decisions about your personal healthcare should be made you and your doctor, not the federal government.

 National Defense/Military
There are many threats to America’s security; most prevalent is the threat of radical Islam. As our country continues to face the growing threat of terrorism by Muslim extremists, the United States must proactively protect its citizens and their freedom at home and abroad. I firmly believe that a strong national defense is essential to securing our homeland. As a freedom loving country, that means the United States has a duty to spread democracy around the world and to remain engaged in the war on terrorism.

 Taxes/Federal Budget
The federal government has grown too big and interferes too much in too many areas of American society right now.  The federal government has a duty under the Constitution to provide basic services and protections to Americans, among them are a national defense, the general welfare, and to ensure that justice is served and that our rights under the Constitution are protected.  However, we have seen increasing levels of government services, entitlements, grants, and foreign aid go unchecked for many decades resulting in an annual federal budget of nearly $3 trillion a year that all of us as taxpayers end up paying for.  What we don't pay for now, we put on the government credit card and on the backs of our children and grandchildren to pay for later.  This is wrong!

 Transportation
Our transportation systems drive the American economy by moving people and goods quickly across our large nation.  Today, there is increasing demand for more efficient and speedier modes of transportation to satisfy the needs of today's traveler and shipper.  This demand puts a great amount of pressure and strain on our transportation infrastructure which is struggling to keep up.  From commuters stuck in traffic jams in their cars on our nation's roads and highways, passengers facing long airline delays, to businesses facing regulatory obstacles in moving their products represent just some of the challenges that require solutions.  I am uniquely aware of these problems and challenges as having served as a Member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee in the 109th and 110th Congress.

 Victim's Rights/Crime
I’ve dedicated my life to promoting justice. After serving as an assistant district attorney for 8 years, I was elected six times as a Harris County felony court judge. As a Judge, I ordered creative sentences, which forced criminals to focus on how their crimes hurt their victims. Some of my creative sentences included ordering sex offenders to place signs on their front lawns to warn others and requiring murderers to secure a photo of their victims on the walls of their prison cells to remind them daily of their crime.
