Help with a Federal Agency

About District Office Casework
As your representative in Washington D.C., I am your direct contact to the Federal Government, its departments, agencies, and Congress. I'm always glad to help constituents encountering difficulties with federal agencies. This section of my website will help you determine if you have a casework issue or not, then how to proceed.

Determining if You Have a Casework issue
Before you contact my office for assistance with a casework issue, it is important to determine if your problem is something my casework staff can assist you with.

If you are experiencing a problem with a federal agency then my office can assist you. Federal agencies are organizations of the federal government, not state and local bodies. Please consult this official A-Z list of federal agencies to determine if the agency you are experiencing difficulty with is federal. Some common examples are:

  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
  • Social Security Administration
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services  (USCIS)
  • Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

If the agencies you are experiencing problems with is on the list, then please also keep in mind that while my office can act as a liaison to a federal agency, in no way can they circumvent the laws, regulations, and procedures set forth by federal law. We may, however, act on your behalf to ensure that your case is handled appropriately, efficiently, and in a manner with respect to your rights as a citizen of the United States.

If your issue is with a California State agency or if it concerns a judicial matter, unfortunately I cannot assist you. As a Member of the United States Congress I do not have jurisdiction to intervene on state matters such as:

  • Child Support
  • Motor vehicle registration or loss of license
  • Welfare
  • State taxes

Some examples of judicial matters that I cannot assist with are:

  • Child custody
  • Divorce
  • Criminal trials or imprisonment

Requesting Assistance
The Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. § 552a
, requires written authorization from the individual requesting intervention in order for my office to assist you. Please complete the Constituent Assistance Form and send it in to my local office:
