Members of Congress have the privilege of recommending a select group of individuals for admission to the United States service academies: Army, Navy, Air Force and Merchant Marine. The limited number of available appointments are highly competitive. Applicants must be of Michigan's Second Congressional District and between 17 and 22 years old. The deadline for submitting applications for 2010 is October 29, 2010. Academy Board interviews will be held in Grand Haven at the United States Coast Guard Group Command Center, 650 South Harbor Drive.
The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, offers appointments solely on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. There are no Congressional appointments or geographical quotas involved.
