We are reminded daily of the sacrifices today’s soldiers and tomorrow’s veterans are making for our country. It is clear that we owe a tremendous debt to our men and women in uniform. One of the best ways for us to show our appreciation is to keep our promises to those who have served in past wars—and to their survivors.
Modernizing the Montgomery GI Bill
In June 2008, an enhanced GI Bill passed Congress and was signed by the President. It fully restores full, four-year college scholarships for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. It includes Matheson’s bill correcting a technicality that precluded Guard and Reservists—returning from multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan— from receiving the educational benefits they had earned.
