Internships

An internship in my Washington office is a unique way of learning about the Legislative branch at work. Capitol Hill is a fast-paced and exciting environment that creates an invaluable educational experience for young people eager to learn about the political process.

Responsibilities of an intern may include answering the phone, sorting mail, handling constituent requests, assisting legislative staff with correspondence, performing administrative duties, attending hearings and briefings, conducting tours of the U.S. Capitol, and working on special projects.

Types of Internships: Internships in my Washington office are designed for undergraduate students and recent graduates with an interest in public service and government. In the summer (May, June, July, August), and for the month of January, I offer internships for one month. Please keep in mind that the summer is a popular period for internships. During the rest of the year, I offer semester-long internships.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong academic background, be hardworking and self-motivated, and possess exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Preference is given to individuals from the 5th District of South Carolina.

Compensation: Interns receive a stipend to defray some of the cost of living in Washington, D.C.

Housing: Interns are responsible for finding their own housing. For housing resources, click here.

To Apply: During the application period only (see below), email a cover letter, resume, and three references (including name, relationship, contact info) to internship.application@mail.house.gov.
