Green Expo 2010

Share |

Green the Capitol made history recently.

The House Green Expo, held on April 15, was the first event of its kind on Capitol Hill. It brought Members of Congress and their staffs together to learn about what the House and businesses around the country are doing to prioritize sustainability and conservation.

House Green Expo 2010

Green the Capitol planned the event with its partners at the Office of the Architect of the Capitol (AOC). More than 30 vendors of products and services ranging from chemical-free beauty products and recycled stationery to eco-sensitive dry cleaning and low-impact travel, displayed their offerings. Representatives from Green the Capitol, AOC and other federal agencies offered information about how the House is reducing energy and water use, diverting waste from landfills, reusing resources and maximizing recycling.

Beyond educating House staff, the expo also inspired staffers to consider their role in greening the Capitol. Whether they chose to play an environmentally themed game or read over a recent Green the Capitol / AOC joint report, everyone was encouraged to ask themselves, “Am I being green today?”

More and more House staffers are asking that question. They ask it every time they stop to think about how to recycle something or when they consider eco-friendly alternatives to things they use every day – from rechargeable batteries and energy-saving power strips to bottle-less water systems and solar phone chargers.

Getting the House to adopt more sustainable business practices means getting staff on board with sustainable thinking. Or, as Rep. Robert Brady put it during comments he delivered at the expo, “It’s our staff that does it all.”
