I am always looking for distinguished applicants to appoint to the country’s leading military academies.
Each year, I nominate one high school senior to each Service Academy. In the fall, I sort through applications and review comments made by the Fifth District Academy Review Board, comprised of retired military and civic leaders. The nomination is based upon ACT/ SAT scores, community activities, extracurricular activities and outstanding moral behavior. Interested high-school seniors can contact my office to apply for an appointment to the Naval or Air Force Academies, the Military Academy at West Point or the Merchant Marines. The deadline for students to apply is October 29 of their senior year.

Merchant Marines Academy
- Located in Kings Point, New York, about 20 miles east of New York City
- Four-year program
- Instills students - called midshipmen (a term used for both men and women) - with the traits of leadership, discipline and dedication required for a career that typically may include service at sea, maritime employment ashore, and serving as a commissioned officer in a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Nearly 40 extracurricular activities available
- Broad college education required for a bachelor of science degree, with the specialized training for licensing as a merchant marine officer, and with the military knowledge for commissioning in a reserve component of the Armed Forces.
U.S. Coast Guard Academy
- No Congressional nomination necessary
- Locatoin in New London, CT
