February 15, 2005

Today, Congressman John Linder (R-GA) was named Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Attack.

As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Attack, Congressman Linder will oversee efforts to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States involving nuclear and biological weapons, and will oversee the Department of Homeland Security’s role in nuclear and biological counter-proliferation and detection of fissile materials, biological weapons, precursors, and production equipment. The Subcommittee will seek to integrate Federal, state, and local efforts in order to prevent nuclear and biological attacks.

“It is an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Attack,” Linder said. “I look forward to working with Chairman Cox to ensure that the Department of Homeland Security is prepared and focused on its mission to protect our citizens and our way of life from these forms of terrorist assaults.”

“Chairman Linder, who served on committee for the 108th Congress, brings great talent and experience to the Committee on Homeland Security,” Chairman Cox said. “I chose John to serve as chairman of this subcommittee because he believes deeply in the Committee’s mission to safeguard America from acts of terror and, most important, prevent terrorists from attacking our country with non-conventional weapons of mass destruction.”

Linder was also named to the Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Cybersecurity, and the Subcommittee on Management, Integration, and Oversight.

The Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Cybersecurity oversees the development of strategies to protect against terrorist attack, to protect critical infrastructure across all sectors, including transportation, security of telecommunications, information technology, electronic infrastructure, and data systems. The Subcommittee on Management, Integration, and Oversight will oversee the progress of the Department of Homeland Security in implementing the management and organizational directives of the Homeland Security Act, and other homeland security-related mandates.
